Why is obvious kata bunkai important
Hello, Charles and friends. This is simple to explain, but I think it wiil be a little lenghty. I recently wrote a little in a similar vein. When I explained we practiced 100 hundred times heain shodan kata for 2 an half hours, that wasnt completely true.We did alot more.Inever counted the reps. But in 1986 I timed it about 12 seconds, now its about14 seconds. When I was about 18 years old an had total 4 years karate. Only my first year in a JKA approved dojo, though. Before that self taught. Now Iwas much faster when I was 18, so I gather it would have been few seconds shorter. Im getting to the point..Some math first.Lets say about 10 seconds per kata of 21 moves.Yame, second for that yoi second for that hajime. total 12 or 13 seconds?[Karate do kyohan, explainsa similar form took less then 6 seconds, Funakoshis own words]for advanced student of course. Now, 21 every 12 seconds for 2 an a half hours one minute break every hour, thats all.How many techniques in 2 an half hours? The total is about over 15 thousands basic moves, for the 2 an half hours, plus half hour of calesthenics. My point, truly everything true karate was about. Power, speed, rooted stance, when needed, and excellent technique. Because of this your body was like iron one punch ended any attacker. We only knew obvious bunkai, but it had worth. This is not a sport. And we were trying to be respectful in all our doings in life. Our karate was for peace, not war. It's obvious we could defend ourselfs even with less then two years of this kind of training. I can only say this kind of training will probably never return. But true bunkai is a very great failure, not to have been showned to the old school students like me. Old traing had it's day. Please learn bunkai, obvious bunkai, in todays training getyou killed. One thing more when you understand your basics an you are healthy use more then all your strength on all techniques.Persevere, please! I digress at times, sorry. One thing more Oyama said this "Karate is not a sport it is not an art it is not even a systeme of self it is a way of learning to die......Peace, Small krane
