Otter Predation at Willington Lake

I was shocked to see the photos of the damage the otters have done at Willington Lake. As mentioned in the press release, two iconic fish have been lost as a result. I am certain the Commttee are doing their utmost to prevent further damage to the fishery. However, the only solution I can see that would work is to fence off the WHOLE lake, with several entrances for the anglers around its perimeter.

Yes Treefella, they are sickening, I was shocked to say the least when I saw them. Only problem, is there is nothing that can be done to repair the damage already caused.
If a solution can be found to prevent similar loses occuring in the future then I will be only too willing to help.

Re: Otter Predation at Willington Lake

Colin,

I made Willington regulars fully aware that a carp and bream had been taken by an otter in November. Otters have been swimming up and down the Ouse for years. Otter prints have been seen around the lake in years gone by and I am in no doubt that the lake has suffered from otter predation in the past.

Perhaps you can tell us the steps that you would have taken to prevent the otter revisiting. I will remind you that the otter is a totally protected species and it is illegal to kill, trap or disturb an otter.

Any carp fishery in the Ouse catchment area (including its tributaries) is at risk from the ever growing otter predation. Conservation groups are actively encouraging otters by constructing otter holts along the river.

I would just like to add what a that i to was sickened by the photos. We've all seen photos in the Angling Press of the damage these animals can do but quess you never think it is going to happen to you. This could have quite a big impact on memerbership with the loss of two prized target fish. What can be done to stop the predetation? As this would make restocking pointless while these Otters have access to the lake.
Colin i would like to think the club investigated what could be done with the problem in October, perhaps someone can advise? Is there anything that anglers on the water can do ( legally)?
Would these fish be covered by insurance? To enable to the replaced once safe to do so?
