Sean/Colin,

A full update will be given at the AGM not through this Forum.

We want all the members to be fully informed, so no doubt I will see you there to put across your points of view.

I have no doubt there are many other clubs in the area who are thinking what action they need to protect their waters. I don't know how many times I have to spell it out, but like it or not, any direct action against any otter is illegal.

richard you have made your point to harm otters is illegal we know that but why flag up a document that explains how to deal with the problems otters bring to waters, and to answer your question about being at the agm i will if work permits, but will we be able to voice our concerns and get proper answers.

Sean29, its very easy to say "To litle to late, the fence should of been put up when the other fish were lost to the otters". . . however, have you actually stopped to think of the implications of your statement??

1) the cost involved with buying 1000 metres (ish) of otter proof fencing, posts, supporting wires etc.

2) Getting permission to erect the fence in the first place from the landlord as Shefford DAA does not own the water.

3) The fence having to be cattle friendly due to the farmer grazing his cattle there.

4) The time required to carry out such a job - especially if the poor attendance at work parties is anything to go by. . .

What has happened is a terrible thing, however, it HAS happened. The next step is to try and prevent further damage being caused. This is something which I am sure the Committee is already undertaking and I am certain it will be under discussion at the AGM.

Colin33 as for your question about being able to voice your concerns. . . that is what the AGM is for! As for the answers, only you can decide whether they are the right answers for you. . . .

andyk74 as allways you have the answears,Well the lost fish can not be replaced so it is to little to late. As for the cost I do understand but I am also sure alot of anglers only jion the club for a chance to catch a 40+ carp at a resonable cost, but now the club has none so maybe the cost in lost members may be higher than the cost of a fence, Also I am sure alot of the anglers that fish willington would of worked to put the fence up knowing that the 2 target fish at the club where at risk. Oh but we will never no as only a handfull of peple where told about the first carp killed by the otter, I feal bad for the anglers that do not have this info and maybe a news letter should be sent out to all the club members so they Know what has happend. I am gutted that the fish have been lost and even more gutted at the way the club has handeled this, Its not hard to put a notice up at willington to inform all the anglers that fish there. regulars or not we are all equial, I bet you have a answear for that to. AGM is no good as not all have the time to attend. Its up to the club to insure that all members are told and the AGM is not the way imo. News letter would be far better imo

Sean, I do not have all the answers. . . You are right that a fence should be put up, I agree with you on that count. The problem is the amount of time required to arrange to get it done.

I believe that the council own the land surrounding the lake, which they lease to the farmer, we then lease the lake and access to it. So to arrange to get a fence installed around the entire perimeter of the lake would require agreement from the council as landlords and the farmer that leases the land surrounding the lake, as he would be losing an amount of land, within the fence, that he pays for. This is not something that can be done in 5 minutes, or more than likely even six months!

The lost fish can be replaced, but obviously not in the immediate future, as anything to do with producing a fishery takes time. The two big Carp that have been lost recently, whilst obviously a big attraction to the club for a number of anglers, are not the only big fish in Willington. Surely the main objective now is to try and protect remaining fish stocks rather than questioning the past actions of people who are only trying to do whats right for the club.

A notice has been posted on the website informing those who have access to it of recent events. A newsletter could be circulated, I suppose, but that is down to the Committee. A notice could be posted on the entrance to the fishery informing any members visiting there of what has happened.

At the end of the day Sean, what has happened is nature. Otters eat fish and unfortunately they have chosen our lake as their dinner table. It is very difficult to protect any of our lakes from natural predation, be it Cormorants, Mink or Otter, either from a practical stand point or a financial one.

The AGM in 2 weeks will be the next point to see what WE as a club go from here. I appreciate you may not be able to make the AGM due to work commitments, however, I am sure the information will be spread to the members.

andy74 you seem to know alot about every thing maybe you should put your ideas into somthing more productive and like sean say start up anews letter os every member know what is happening not just the ones on line and those who go to the so called agm meetings for the clicky few.nothing really get resolved there. it is all talk and no action . but while wrighting this note otters could be eating more fish remember no fish no members no club, and hopfully no present commitee who are not doing any urgent remidies to this problem.so maybe its time to move on after 18 years as a member

They say talk is cheap, and there is certainly some cheap talk going on by people who do absolutely nothing for this club. Some of the rubbish that is being spouted deserves nothing but contempt.

The current committee is the best the club has had for years, and the vast amount of work that goes on behind the scenes by unpaid volunteers, on behalf of all members, deserves nothing but praise.

People who really care about the club actually put something positive back into it. Unfortunately others only seem to become active when they take the opportunity to slag off anyone or anything, clearly without putting any thought into what they are actually saying. To say that an agm is for the clicky few, and that nothing really gets resolved beggars belief. An Annual General Meeting is just what it says. Every member can attend, and every member can submit proposals for rule changes. Every member at the AGM has the right to vote on these changes, and other AGM business. The club even holds another general meeting where members can come along and discuss their ideas with the committee.

Andy74 is not a committee member, but he puts a lot back into the club. His reasoned approach to this problem should be applauded, and is in total contrast to comments which clearly haven't been thought through, have been made as though the writer knows what is going on, when clearly he doesn't, and seem only to have been made to take digs at the committee.

If people aren't prepared to help, and can't be constructive, they should keep quiet and let those that do the work get on with it.

Re: Otter Predation at Willington Lake

Here is an idea for you Colin. Seeing as you and Sean are SO in favour of a newsletter, why don't YOU produce one to inform everyone of the FACTS of the events at Willington, and also inform people of the consequences if anyone decides to try and resolve the problem in their own way, considering the Otter has very high legal protection.
YOU can then approach the Committee for approval and arrange to post it to every member the club has.

At least then you both would have done something positive instead of just moaning.

While you are researching that, perhaps you could also do some research to try and find a way or ways, to prevent it occuring again. Obviously this would have to include the legal aspects regarding both the Otter and the landowner issue, any effects a resolution could have on the farmers livestock ie fencing and also the cost issues. You could then arrange the work parties and try and get people to attend to carry out the work.

Perhaps then you would realise just what a difficult subject this is to solve.

Alternatively if you are not prepared to do any of the above then perhaps you should at least turn up at the AGM, clicky or not, to listen to what the club says so you hear it first hand instead of jumping to irrational conclusions. If you have a good idea that could help the situation then I am sure the Committee would take it on board.

This time is difficult enough with the loss of such high profile fish, but now is the time to try and prevent further losses instead of just pointing the finger and berating the people who are working to correct it as best as can be done.

I look forward to your response. . . .
