Re: spinning
Ben,
I can only advise on Willington Lake & River.
On the river stretch you can catch Perch up to 3lb on a silver/red Mepps but right now the weed is thick on the bottom, reducing the depth by half in places. You may need to retrieve quicker than normal, unless you want to help with the swim clearing.
The lake is different because the Pike in there are lazy wotsits in my opinion and you would be better off dead-baiting a sardine or maybe good old fashioned sink-and-draw?
The summer heavy weed growth has been dramatically cut back by the geese (carp fans please note) so spinning is now possible. Try either side of The Point, which is on the river side of the island, as Pike seem to hang around there.
Bright early morning better than dull afternoon - as usual with spinning. Let us know how you get on.

Re: spinning
Hi Ben 94,
I've heard the pool beneath the weir at Paxton produces a few fish, though have never tried there myself.
There is a pike match coming up in the not too distant future along the Lammas Meadow section above the weir. Having fished it for bream a few times, it looks like there should be a few predators along there, especially in the wooded area. Why not come along and see what the day produces? (All details in the club card.)
One river I have lure fished before is the Ivel from Jordans Mill through behind Broom Lake and up the Stanford Canal. In the Summer when the weed is prolific surface lures work well retrieved through the narrow channels - this year resulting in pike to 5 lb, perch and a couple of chub.
During the Winter when the frosts cut the weed back I find a large Ondex fished on a slow retrieve along the margins produces a lot of fish. Granted there are a lot of jacks in there, but I have taken perch to over 2 lb in sessions previously.
With the chub and perch along the Ivel packing the weight on, I'm sure persistence is the key. Also, keep a diary noting temperatures, weather conditions, flow etc. etc along with your results and you will soon see a pattern emerging as to when the best times to fish are.
Hope this helps.

Re: spinning
Ben,
Many years ago, as Ian Barnard's guest, I pole fished the Jordans stretch of the Ivel in winter. It was so cold I only needed two maggots - one on the hook and another for loose feed.
I was just reeling in a stickleback after my only bite of the day when a pike struck. After a five minute battle, during which the pike didn't really accept that it was hooked, I caught a glimpse of the fish before it took off. It looked to be around 6-7lb.
But the weirdest thing was that it hadn't broken my 1.5lb hooklength, as my hook came home with a plug attached! I still have it, though few would believe the story.

Re: spinning
Ben
You should try the river at the back of Broom lakes. There is always a jack pike to give you a bend in the rod but I have had them up to 12.2 lbs .Try rubber shad as the bait.
