Re: Cormorant
Killing 60000 cormorants a year does not seem unreasonable to me!!!
Seriously though, bird conservation groups, such as the RSPB and others throughout Europe, cannot even agree on Cormorants! Some people claim that there are two different sub-species, those that feed and live in saltwater and those that feed/live in freshwater.
Until this argument can be solved by the "scientists" fishing clubs such as ours have very little hope of an effective deterrant/cull.
As Richard has stated, it is up to anglers on each water to frighten off any Cormorants in a humane way.
Unfortunately they are just one part of the natural predation of fish. Herons, kingfishers and Mink being other culprits. Herons and kingfishers are not too much of a problem, but I have witnessed Mink on other fisheries, catching and killing fish and then leaving them on the bank to rot!
We will never stop fish being taken from club waters, but hopefully, if everyone participates wherever they are fishing, we can minimise the effects on each water by scaring predators as much as possible.

Re: Cormorant
As has already been stated on this thread, even if you CAN get a licence to cull them, you are only allowed to cull a certain number of them and not ALL of them that are visiting the lake.
I still think a lot of the deterrent is down to us anglers waving our arms and landing nets like loons to get them to clear off!
