posticon willow pool?

after driving by willow pool a few times and doing my home work to find who owned it,i joined shefford so i can fish closer waters(plus the other venues).unfortunately im only hearing negative comments about the quality of fishing.yes there is often secrecy if a venue is doing well but can somebody give an honest non-*****y review of it,please?baillifs, club officials or venue regulars, somebody must be fond of it.thanks.

Re: willow pool?

If the Willow is fishing well someone is doing a very good job of keeping it quiet. Willow was stocked back in the spring of 2006 with roach, bream and crucians (20,000 in total).

Most anglers I have talked to have struggled to catch a fish on there. One angler reported catching a 12oz roach on his first cast and then nothing else all day. The lake is quite weedy with an abundance of natural food so the fish may not be interested in anglers' baits. However, it is also gin clear which makes life relatively easy for the predatory birds. Whenever I have walked round Willow grebes have been present and diving, which suggests they have enough food to keep them in the area.

My personal view is that for whatever reason survival and recruitment of the fish we stocked has been poor. If there are significant numbers of fish present the margins should now be full of small fry. I didn't see any fry on my last visit a month ago, but this may have been too early. A colleague walked round casting a fish finder and it only indicated fish in a small area of the lake.

The longer term issue for Willow is the planned development of the Bedford River Valley Park and the likely future construction of a 2000m rowing lake, which may swallow Willow Pool at a future date.

These factors all have to be taken into account in the clubs future plans for Willow.

Re: willow pool?

thanks for the reply.sounds like a rowing course is the best thing for it.if that does go ahead then we could hold the world champs on willow pool and it could be known as Holme Peirrepont of the south!nobody will catch but the club could get a load of cash from FAPPS(i believe thats the name of the fishing body that runs the world champs)!!!
Is there any knowledge of pike in the willow,or should i just tippex-out the map and use that page for recording fish weights from the better venues?!!

Re: willow pool?

When Elstow Brook floods it flows in to the lake adjacent to Willow and I know there are now a few pike in there, so presumably there are some food fish in there too. I'm not sure about pike being in Willow.

The club won't be making any money out of Willow as we have been renting the fishing rights rather than being the owner of the lake. We also paid for the 20,000 fish that were stocked back in 2006.

Remember Broom Lake and Willington Lake started life as newly dug gravel pits and the club has successfully developed these as fisheries. Why have the fish stocks in Willow failed to take off? I don't know the answer! Many people suspect cormorants, but I'm not convinced it is that simple.
