stanford canal

hi all

i have been a member for years and it has just occoured to me that i have never fished stanford canal!

so a freind and I are planning to give it a crack this weekend! we will just go with one rod each and probably start with float fishing.

has anyone had much luck here in the past? what are we likely to catch? baits? good swims? any advice would be good as i have only been to look at it once and cant really remember what it was like?

thanks in advance

Pinner, the only time I have ever fished the Stanford Canal was during a Cub match over 20 years ago! All I caught was about 70 Gudgeon!

Good luck with your trip and let us know how you get on.

Although, more recently I think there have been some decent Chub and Perch come out of there. I have also heard reports of decent Carp being caught out of the Ivel by the junction with the Stanfod Canal, so there is no reason why they would not move up into the Canal.

Good luck with your trip and let us know how you get on.

If you can it's probably worth trying the stretch from behind Broom Lake where it joins the river. In the past i've had some good chub and pike out of there on surface plugs (though granted it was during the Summer)emoticon

Given the walk as you will appreciate it doesn't get fished that often! emoticon

Believe it or not, you may actually struggle to catch gudgeon down there, or should I say gudgeon like there used to be in there.

The couple of matches down there over this and the last season failed to produce much in the way of gudegeon nets at all. I think the winner of this years match had approaching 40 fish and weighed in just under a pound- and-a-half!

I suppose at least the float keeps going under which is what it's all about. . . .

Good luck! Lets hope you hit upon a shoal of monsters! emoticon

You can't complain at that pinner! emoticon

It beats blanking! My aim whenever I go fishing is to catch at least one fish, doesn't matter how small, as long as I catch one. . . that way I have achieved what I set out to do in the first place!
