Broom lake improvements

Visitors to Broom lake may start to notice the work that is being undertaken there.

There is an ongoing programme on the lake to remove some of the trees to reduce the amount of leaf drop into the lake and, in doing so, reduce the amount of silt build-up that has happened over the years.

The work will also help prevent loss of tackle in the trees. We have recovered several leads, marker floats and miles of line so far. This will also help prevent birds from getting tangled up.

The intention is to work on the islands, first of all, before work starts on the margins.

To give people an idea of the volume of work, it has been calculated that so far it has taken approx 84 man hours to thin (and dispose of) the trees on the first island and there is still work to do before this island is complete and work can commence on the second island.

I understand Andyk74 will be putting a more detailed list of work to be done, on the web. This will also include details of possible planting and information regarding the depth survey that was carried out in september (we have also performed a depth survey on the airman pit).

There is still a massive amount of work to be done. If you are interested in helping, please keep an eye on the web-site for dates. Work normally commences around 8am. Wherever possible, the lake will remain open, but there will be disruption. Please bear with us. The work is being done to improve the environment and (hopefully) the fishing.

Please feel free to comment on the work being done. Bear in mind that, initially, the islands might look a little barren in places but will obviously start to grow back in the spring. We welcome any constructive comments. We also welcome any offers of help.

Andyk and I will be back at Broom on Weds 11th Nov to finish the 1st island off. If you can help, bring along a mug. It's not just the chainsaw that gets used. The kettle gets a fair bit of use too!

Lastly, I would just like to a say a huge "thank you" to the people who have put in those hours at Broom and the other hours of toil on our other venues. No need for names, you know who you are and without your help we would not be where we are now.

There will be a work party at Broom on Wedensday 11th November starting at 0830. The next work party is the 19th and 20th November. Same start time. Hopefully we will be starting work on the second island by then.

If anyone is interested in helping out then PM myself or Biggus so we can plan the work for the day depending on the number of people who are going to be available.

It will also give us an idea of how much bacon and rolls we need to bring along, too.

As on the previous post, if you attend, bring along a mug. There is always a brew on the go.

The first island is now completed and we have moved onto the second island.

Before anyone says anything, we realise the tree stumps have got to be removed!! This will be done once we have finished work on the second island. Both islands will be de-stumped together.
