posticon IPA / Other Shefford Waters

Over the years I have been a member of the club, I have seen a number of venues listed in the clubcard but have never actually been able to find where they are, one of these being at Astwick.

As far as the IPA waters are concerned, the only venue I've ever fished has been Biggleswade Common.

Does anyone know of lesser fished waters / stretches of the Ivel that may be fished on the Shefford ticket / IPA?

I wondered if the IPA may have a guide available that would identify waters that may be fished by affiliated clubs?

Can anyone help?

Re: IPA / Other Shefford Waters

As far as I know an 'IPA guide' does not exist. For this reason, we are currently working on trying to improve the descriptions of IPA waters for inclusion in next years club book along with maps to make the boundaries far clearer.

'The old canal course' described in the current club book is no longer available to IPA members. However, there are additional stretches of the Ivel in Stotfold and the Hiz in Arlesey available to IPA members.

I have been reliably informed that the Astwick stretch runs downstream on the left hand bank from the road bridge (grid reference TL214384) to a point 200 yards before you reach the railway.

The major stretches that IPA members can fish are from Holme Mill (Jordans) downstream on the left hand bank, under the A1, past the recreation ground, along the 'back meadows' to the road bridge. Then from the Dan Albone car park downstream on the right hand bank all the way to Sandy New Road (note the BHAA 'private fishing' sign right next to the river in the second field upstream of Sandy New Road refers to their Sandy Lakes complex not the river which is IPA!! Big chub reported from this stretch in this weeks Anglers Mail but failed to mention it was IPA). Then from Sandy New Road downstream on the left hand bank past the overflow weir down to the footbridge.

I hope this helps for now and fingers crossed that the rivers will actually be fishable before the end of the river season.

Reference Biggleswade Road bridge downstream to Sandy New road, I walked all the way down this stretch Chub fishing last summer, the problem was I couldn't get as far as the new road due to barbed wire fencing and the footpath ending just downstream of Manor Farm behind the gravel works! I could see a couple of lakes on the far bank, just down from the gravel works and a large lake behind me (I was on the left hand bank facing downstream) with nature reserve signs up. However the footpath just finished and there was fencing barring the way. . .Knowing my luck I was probably fishing the wrong bank!! Just wondered if anyone else had been this far downstream recently?

If you walk downstream on the right hand bank from the Dan Albone car park you eventually come to a fence at the bottom of Biggleswade Common. Just downstream of this fence is a footbridge over the Ivel which will take you to Manor Farm. If you travel upstream from Sandy New Road on the left hand bank you come to a style, cross this and carry on upstream with BHAA's McGregor Lake on your left until you reach a brook. The stretch from the fence at the bottom of Biggleswade Common to the brook belongs to Cemex. I am still trying to confirm, but I believe IPA members can fish this stretch. Access details and a map can be found on the Cemex Angling web site.

Richard, with reference to your reply concerning the stretches of the Ivel in Stotfold and the Hiz in Arlesey which can be fished, are you able to confirm exactly where these stretches are?

I used to play in the for-bridge down from Stotfold Mill as a child and have caught many stickle backs and millers thumbs from beneath the bridge during the Summer holidays.

Walking over the bridge a few months ago, scanning the water revealed a shoal of half a dozen roach about 6 - 8 inches long which was a bit surprising!

I used to love and indeed still love walking along the river there. I remember once walking from the riverside all the way through to Astwick which was a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

It's a few years since I last went along the stretch; I think a ditch had been cut through the pathway discharging into the river where the riverside ends. I managed to get across but soon got shouted at by one of the farmers so had to turn back!

I also remember going down Astwick Mill and seeing a couple of chub emerge from beneath the bridge and disappear into the weed beds as quickly as they appeared!

The river holds a lot of fond memories, and if I can winkle a fish or two out of there, it would be wonderful; I just need to know which stretches I can fish!!

Please help!

Check out the main web site where you will find new maps of all SDAA waters. There are also new maps of IPA waters

http://www.shefforddaa.org.uk/ipa_waters.htm

The IPA maps may still need some revision as we are trying to clarify the exact boundaries and access points of some sections, e.g. the Willow Hay/Cemex sections near Manor Farm.

I haven't walked any of the Astwick, Stotfold or Arlesey stretches. The maps on our web site are based on some excellent hand drawn maps. You can find copies of these at:

http://www.braggersanglingclub.co.uk/ipawaters.html

However, some of these maps are quite old and some boundaries may have changed. E.g. I was told that you can now fish from immediately downstream of the road bridge at Astwick.

Unfortunately I'm not sure all the waters display an IPA sign to highlight the boundaries. The important thing is not to stray onto waters run by other clubs.

Those maps look as though they could be useful. Thank you.

I suppose my only thoughts are -

1. actually getting access to the waters,
2. if there are any swims there
3. if there is a sufficient depth present to actually be able to fish.
4. and the obvious one of are there actually any fish resident along the stretch

As the saying goes, there's only one way to find out!

What is the position regarding the cutting out of swims if there are none present? I have walked along the first section of the Astwick stretch from the road towards the railway and recall there was nothing but thick vegetation / hedging. Also I recall the land has ploughed tight to the boundary, so to get access will necessitate walking across the field.

When there is no direct pathway evident I always feel a little vulnerable when crossing such areas.

I will endeavour to locate some of these waters and see will report back in a follow up posting.

Reference my earlier post regarding Biggleswade road bridge down to Sandy new road, I have just looked at the link you put on one of your posts Richard, and noticed that, I was indeed trying to fish the wrong bank!!!
The fishable bank from Sandy new road is on the opposite bank to the one I was walking along!
Nevermind, at least I know now!
Good maps by the way!
Also I didn't realise there was as much river by Astwick, might have to go for a walk and have a look. . .

Re: IPA / Other Shefford Waters

Went fishing today (Monday) along the Broom section from Jordan's Mill down to Biggleswade mill. Didnt realise they had cut down all the trees along there! I was hoping to get a bit of protection from the cold wind from them. . . fat chance, ended up with a very cold neck!
Anyway, all I caught was a small Gudgeon, probably due to my very rusty, flowing water, float fishing skills - especially on a centre pin. I enjoyed it all the same. Fishing there again tomorrow (Tuesday) but I will leger the section this time and see what happens.
The main purpose of the above drivel is to ask if anyone has any tips on general float fishing with a centre pin, they would be greatly appreciated.
