River Great Ouse, Lamas Meadow, Paxton

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone can help, I have fished Great Paxton a few times and have caught some nice fish, however I am not really sure where the 'Lamas meadow' actually is. When I go , I turn into the allotments and park next to the SDAA sign at the end, I then walk down a path for about 10 yards and there are about 4-5 swims.

I usually fish the double swim, but I have tried to walk further down stream, but due to the under -growth, I wasn't sure that you could. The section I fish certainly isn't a meadow, so if someone could let me know where I need to go, I would be greatful.

Thanks
Stuart

Stuart,

It is probably worth exploring all the Little Paxton waters without your tackle to weigh you down, or travel light as you will need to walk some way.

If you walk upstream of the designated car park you can get on to the raised footpath next to the B1041. If you turn left you will come to a set of traffic lights at the junction of the B1041 and Mill Lane. A footpath goes from these traffic to the river (its a fairly long walk) and this is Lammas Meadow (nice flat banks). If you walk upstream you should see a golf course on the opposite bank and a sign marks the upstream boundary. Downstream is a wood and we can fish for approx 200 metres downstream into the wooded area.

If you turn right on the raised walkway and cross the river we can fish the downstream right hand of the main river and the downstream left hand bank of the navigable section (from below the house), to where the two meet.

Back to the car park we can fish downstream past the sewage farm for approx 750 metres, but as you say much of this is overgrown with some very steep banks.

I hope this helps.

New maps of club waters are now available on the main web site, which include Little Paxton as described above.

Just following on from Richards reply, it is worth pointing out that I believe there is another carpark which we can use that will get you a little closer to the Meadow.

If you go over the traffic lights instead of turning left to get the the allotments, you will see the uprights on your left, and probably 200 meters further on still on the left there is a carpark next to a building (presumably the rugby club house?).

Park here, and if you climb over the gate directly opposite the carpark entrance and head across the field towards the wooded area on your right you will come to a gate. Carry on through the gate and you will eventually come to the river.

It's a lovely looking piece of water, and as the latest report on the weeks activities shows, there are a few fish in there also.

Just beware, the river there does get used by the local rowing club and they do have a habit of getting a bit close to the inside bank!

Attempted to fish there last Sunday. Made it to the gate between the two fields and the water was approaching the top of the boots. . .

Needless to say it was another weekend without fishing a river!
