Re: Weed Control
What an interesting thread, how does a simple question get turned into a full scale argument ?
As club secretary let me clarify a few points regarding this thread:-
1. The majority of the committee of SDAA are not long serving as suggested by the pheonix but have joined the committee in the last 3 years and are just finding their feet in how a fishing club runs.
2. With regard to the constant jibes being made at the committee about the leasing and stocking of Willow Pool which was 2 years ago and has nothing to do with the current running of the club let me explain. At the time that Willow Pool came up for lease the club did not have a lake that was producing an kind of decent silver fish catches and the committee wanted to have a water for those members who don't fish for specimens. The stocking programme for the pool was to buy a certain amount of stock from a fish farm and then to supplement that stocking with fish from Stanford Pit. Unfortunately the Environment Agency told us that it would be disastrous to try and net Stanford with the water level so low as the amount of silt that would be stirred up would reduce the oxygen content in the water to zero and there would be horrific fish fatalities as a result. Therefore this part of the stocking has not taken place however we are still in consultation with the EA over netting Stanford incase it dries up. The committee came to a decision based on what they believed was right for the membership, we are only human and if it was a mistake then so be it but it's history now and the club needs to move forward.
3. With regard to the committee losing waters (ie Harrold Country Park) but spending money then please refer to the posting on harrold to understand why we have let it go. It was not purely for financial reasons, we had spent 2 years trying to come to an amicable agreement with the park over use of boilies, bivvies etc which constantly came up against a brick wall. All the time this was going on the club was being charged for solicitors fees etc so we decided to cut our losses as the rents were far to high and a final agreement could not be reached.
4. And finally to answer the original query regarding the weed control. It was bought to the committees attention that a number of carp were being tethered in the reeds that border most of the swims. Those who fish the Airman will know that there are several swims where the reeds create almost a straight tunnel out from the bank and when a carp picks up a baited hook it goes one side of the swim or the other and often gets into the reeds resulting in the angler pulling for a break which either leaves the fish trailing line or drags the fish through the reeds, neither of which is good for it. The committee decided that rather than declare swims unfishable then we would take action. The contractor has been asked to quite simply take the corners off of the tunnelled swims to allow a larger "open area" directly in front of the angler. This he has done using chemical crystals to stop the regrowth and he will return around May/June time to deal with anything that the crystals have missed using a basic "Round Up" weedkiller. He was also asked to cover some of the area that the small lilies grow in at the car park end of the lake to minimise there regrowth this year.
I hope this answers the question, maybe if we had put "Reed Control" instead of "Weed Control" it would have made more sense to begin with, our aplogies.
