R.I.P. BOB LOOS
My surfing mentor Bob Loos is dead at 50-and I am more than devastated. He was found dead in his bed last Thursday in his Long Beach home. I knew he was bummed by his mother Marilyn's death just a few months ago...and I figured Bob would'nt be around much longer. I will miss very, very much. I feel priveleged to have gotten him in his prime. Bob taught me everything there was to know about surfing. He took me everywhere, showed me the ropes, how to surf in crowds, how to deal with kooks, bullies, and babes! He also taught me his special brand of freestyle surfing...as I was his surfing protege for over 20 years. Bob was known best for his surfing...he was the best surfer I have ever seen...better than anyone...He charged Todos way before the XXL challenge bull****, he did headstands in the tube at Pipe, he did fin-first take-offs anywhere on anything,
he spun more tailspin and helicopter 360's than anyone ever (13 was his record at SanO and 6 in the tube was his record at Southside), he mastered the art of switchfoot surfing decades before it became hip, he did switch cutbacks and switch roundhouses like no one ever, he took off 3-4 pilings back right next to the seawall at Southside Seal, he did standing seawall takeoffs at Northside, he did sick seawall grinds and rock 'n' roll boardslides-at the expense of many boards! Bob showed how do it all-and I am truly grateful for the kindness, generosity, and love he gave me. I got Bob's golden years-when he was ON! It was a true privelege being a little grom and getting to roll everywhare with him-I ate it all up! Now, I am the only one that has benefitted fro his lessons of life and surfing...there's so much more I can say, but, I think this is enough. BOB LOOS Rest In Piece(guns!)
Your humble pupil-
davO
