Iconic Abums

Okay let's talk albums, not just albums to skate to, but albums of all kind. I'm in hopes of sharing some of my favorites, and learning of albums which I may never have given a chance. My first suggestion however is not at all obscure to the Skate Community. I offer TSOL's Dance With Me as an absolute must have.

Dance With Me has a spooky and original sound, that got in my head the very first time I played it in 1982. This album is chock full of power, but is much more melodic than what I was use to hearing from Punk bands at the time. TSOL took Hardcore in a darker, more foreboding direction, that I found irresistible. If you have ever watched the 1931 version of Dracula, and found it strangely erotic, or read Frankenstein and found yourself oddly understanding of the Creature's revenge, you need this album. On Dance With Me, TSOL wrote about subjects theretofore untouched by the Punk world, and use odd cord and tempo changes to create their masterwork. The closest thing I can equate to is Black Sabbath meets Velvet Underground.

There is something to offend every single corner of polite society on this album, and being one who has been made uncomfortable by the band's subject matter, I must say I find the sensation very cool. There's not a weak cut on the disc and yes, you can indeed skate to it. Not only was this disc important to the Hardcore scene, but other scenes ass well. The "Goth" types owe more than they will ever know to TSOL, but sadly, most have never heard a single tune from this legendary SoCal Hardcore outfit. With Dance with me, they were dark, heavy, melodic, sarcastic and at the top of their game. TSOL was a breath of fresh air to the Hardcore scene, and this disc stands like a tombstone to mark the era.

That is a good one but their first EP really is my favorite, I'm a political MF at heart. ABOLISH GOVERNMENT!

Right on Michael,

You're not only a politically aware man, but a cat who can strap on the acoustic and get soulful with a little, Wish You Were Here. It was the coolest part of the afternoon for me, to sit and listen for a few minutes. By the way, I went to Tempe and saw TSOL a week ago yesterday, and they sound better than ever. Not bad at all for a band who doesn't practice. Jack said that he sees Ron when he walks on stage, and asks him what he wants to play. It was an all request show, very cool.

JFA and skaterock.com 4-life!
