Making Windows XP go faster
As an IT guy, I'm constantly being asked "my PC is slow, how can i speed it up?"
Sadly there is no quick answer, also it's difficult to explain some things without using pictures, so i've put together a little tutorial. Eventually it will have many parts, which i'll add when i get time.
These only apply to "Windows XP" and wil not work on other versions. I cannot accept responsibility for any damages caused by using these techniques, i can only say that they've worked 100% of the many times i've applied them before.
So to kick things off, here's part 1 : Disk Cleanup
1. Close any programs you may have running
2. From the START button, find "disk cleanup" as shown below
3. Click OK when asked which disk to clean up (usually the C: drive)
4. Wait for the analysis to be done. This can range from a few seconds to a few hours!
5. Tick all the boxes, noting that you need to 'scroll down' to see all the options
6. click OK to start the tidyup, and wait.
You're done . More to follow soon...

Re: Making Windows XP go faster
Soundcatcher!! Tried your method of pushing said pc out of window....didn't work mate....have calculated would have to be on 13th floor to get to optimum speed, then possibly....but being in a terraced house in Lancing with an maximum fall of 27 and a half feet from the ridge tile ( If I was allowed by Her to actually climb up there in the first place!) ....am going to conceed defeat and upgrade from Amstrad 1640 with 248kb of ram; to a Dell 346 running windows 3.1 with 4mb of ram!!!!! Wish me luck fella, should feel like going down the strip at the pod in the Jaggermeister! Pleeze xcuse spellin....been on the red wine....cool times....

Re: Making Windows XP go faster
Part 2...
In part 2 we'll clear the 'temporary files' from our computer. Although they're not dangerous in any way, temporary files can slow down your PC if there's enough of them (we're talking 'more than few hundred' here).
There are 2 parts to this excercise, first we need to make the files visible (they're noramlly hidden), then we can delete them.
This is a bit more difficult than part 1, but if you are happy using the file manager, opening folders and selecting files etc then you should be OK
Here goes...
1. Close any applications you have open
2. Empty the 'recycle bin' (found on the desktop) by right-clicking on it, then choosing 'empty recycle bin'.
The reason we empty the bin now is that it makes things easier if some of the temporary files need to be retrieved from the bin at a later date
3. Open windows explorer. The quickest way to do this is to hold your finger on the 'windows' key (the one between the CTRL and ALT keys), and press the letter e at the same time
4. From the Tools menu, choose Folder Options
5. On the box that appears, there are 5 steps to do :
1 Click the VIEW tab
2 Tick the 'show hidden files and folders' button
3 click Apply
4 click Apply to all folders
5 click OK
6. By using the + signs next to the folders on the left hand side, open up the tree as shown below.
Note that where this screen shows 'dale.wheeler', your screen will show something different. Instead it may have your name, or it may just say 'user' or 'owner'.
It's vital that the Address shows "C:\Documents and Settings\<something>\Local Settings\Temp"
7. Once you've clicked on the TEMP folder (see above) you should see lots of files on the right hand side, some will have strange names! The next bit is tricky so be careful...
If you click the grey bar which says 'Date Modified' it will sort the files and folders into date order. Clicking it again will reverse the sorting order by the way, but you want it to show the most recent files at the top of the list.
Now hold down the CTRL key and press the 'a' key at the same time; the files on the right should all be highlighted.
You could press the Delete key at this point, but it's quite likely that those files with todays date on them won't want to be deleted. To get around this, put your finger on the CTRL key, then using the mouse click on any files which have todays date. You should end up with something like the screen shown below, where some files are highlighted (in blue), but the ones that have todays date aren't.
Once you're happy, press the Delete key and the temporary files will be deleted, which may take some time depending on how many there were
OK, you're finished!
Although i've never known it to be true, it is possible that one/some of the files we just deleted might be needed by some application, so don't empty the recycle bin just yet.
Leave it a few weeks, or until you're happy that all your programs are working properly, then empty the recycle bin
More to come sometime...
