How many classic VW owners are in the U.K?
Hi all,
I'm doing a bit of research on VW ownership and was wondering if anyone has a rough figure of how many classic VW owners there are in the U.K?
Any help would be greatfully recieved

It would be in the DVLA's database for sure, but getting that information is going to be a nightmare unless you know someone who works there, and who is willing to do a bit of research

That would only give the details of registered vws though. There are loads that are not registered.
Plus you have to take into account the selfish sods like me who have more than one vw. 
Serena and i are just 2 owners but with 8 dubs.
Almost impossible to ever be able to figure out i think.

I know it's a tough one.
I am after the number of owners though. Not the number of vehicles.
Am thinking of releasing some products but just trying to get some figures so I would have a rough idea of potential customers.

I guess it all depends on whether your products are going to be vehicle specific or just aimed at vw owners. Mind you...Is it a pre requesit that you should own a vw in order to purchase said product?
To explain Animal produce vw based clothing and they get worn by lots of people who only dream of having the vehicle or the lifestyle but don't actually have one.
If you were going to produce a key chain with a logo or wording such as 'air cooled and tax free' then that might be a bit specific for average joe to go out and buy.
Unless your products are going to be bolted onto a classic vw and you have different products for differnt models then whats to stop other classic vehicle enthusiasts from wanting your product??
Bit of a can of worms. There's always a huge market for vw related products. A smaller market for vehicle specific products. And a global market for generic classic vehicle related products.
As for numbers.....You might want to start by getting attendance figures for vw shows and possibly subscription figures from vw mgazines and vehicle specific clubs...ie ssvc, sdbc...etc?

Hmmm good points raised above.
I think it may well be worth contacting both Volksworld and Ultra VW and checking which magazine has the highest sales figure. Not just on subscriptions but including shop sales. I expect Volksworld will have the highest readership as it's sold in the supermarkets as well as newsagents.
Whatever that figure is, i bet you can probably multiply it by a factor of 10 at least as there are sooo many vw owners i know that don't buy either of the mags.
Show figures will be a bit hit and miss as a huge amount of owners don't go to any shows and at the same time, some people (like me lol) go to most of them.
A good start is the Volkszone forum. There are around 40000 members. If it's a product you could sell on the internet and by mail order, check thesamba.com they are a huge forum with members from all over the world.
As mentioned, what type of products are you considering selling? They may appeal to a more general audience than just the owners?

Wow,
Some really good advice there. The better half and I believe there's a gap in the market. Would be mostly VW owners but would also appeal to a lot of people who just like dubs.
