need help

I'm looking for a 'good' and 'knowledgable' computer person that can do something with mine!! It works ok but won't let me update anything for windows, msn has also stopped working now, and all my microsoft word etc don't work either (all thanks to the health check up it went for at pc world!!)
Please can someone recommend a place or person near to me in Bexhill? (not pc world) thanks !

Can't belive you took it to pc world!! Those ingrates don't have a clue what they are doing most of the time. Just try phoning them and asking a question.....and listen for the silence and then the erm.......followed by....I'll just ask someone...followed by the wrong information! emoticon

Fraid I don't know anyone near you...If you were near me I'd say give it to me.....I've not be beaten by a pc yet and I've lost count of how many I've had in bits at work!(mind you I'm a sound engineer not an IT tech....mind you some day's you wouldn't know it! emoticon

What version of windows and office are you running and do you have the official disks?

Has anything else stopped working??? Are you getting any error messages??

You might want to email me (see the button at the bottom of this post) with the answers to my questions....that's if I haven't offended you with my first paragraph. emoticon

Ask Dale on here, he's pretty nifty with a computer so might be able to lend a hand.

Re: need help

No offence taken!! I'm running on windows vista. My outlook express also not working i have to get emails through my internet provider. I get a little message on the tool bar every now and then telling me windows cannot search for updates, click here to resolve, and when i do it tries to download updates but then errors. Also when i on computer it fires up as if it uploading something but nothing happens!! and when i shut down it downloads updates but then nothing happens., so frustrating as have ipod which can't use as it won't let me upload the software!!
I have norton antivirus so i don't think its a bug as it hasn't picked anything up but not really 'computer up'd' so it might have!
I don't have original disks as when i bought it ,it was already set up i only had to plug it in and go!
Any help gratefully recieved

Argh! Norton, sporn of the devil!! It might be Norton that's causing your issues. Try turning it off and then updating and see if that helps?! Norton tends to take over your system and do exactly as it see's fit rather than what you or Windows would like to do! I haven't paid for Antivirus for years. I now run AVG Free
and I've not had any issues yet...famous last words!

As you weren't given any disks when you purchased your pc (new from a retailer, new from small pc shop/man or second hand?) you might not have a genuine copy which could cause this issue also.... if you go to Here! and on the left of the page there is a link to validate windows and also validate office. That will help you eliminate that potential issue.

Have you thought about restoring your system back to a date before your trouble started to see if that fixes it?

There's no such thing as a computer dummy. Your just getting started. Evryone has to start with the basics and over time...well it all depends on what you need or are intersted in learning...

As for system restore.

Click Start

Click All Programs

Click Accessories

Click System Tools

This will drop down the contents of the System Tools folder and you'll see System Restore near the bottom.

Click System Restore

You will then probably be asked if you want to continue.

Click Continue

This will bring up the System Resore Application.

Select Choose you own restore point and find a restore point that is before your troubles started. Select it and follow the instructions.

It should be straight forward....having said that should you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. No question is every silly. If you don't know the answer to it it's worth asking.

Andy

Hi Lillyberts,
If you run out of options then I have a somewhat unconventional way out for you...

Send us a PM with your address and I'll post you a Linux CD which you can load. It's an alternative to windows which works without altering any of the data that's on your PC at the moment. Been using it for years by the way
If having tried it for a while you decide it's not for you, then we'll fix your PC in exchange for a few beers** emoticon
Dale

** OK so this is unfair to those people (advertised in the friday-ad for example) who make a living from fixing PCs.
If that worries you then try them first!
