A little in advance this one but anyone covered seats before and willing to help?

Right, keep this secret please guys...I'm sure Denise doesn't come on here but...

It is her 40th birthday in November and I want to surprise her by fitting out the inside of her bug with a two tone interior set of seat covers door cards and blue carpet.

Anyone ever fitted something like the Harrington, TMI, Spirit of the 50s sets etc. If so how hard are they to fit? And would a day be long enough to get the job done? And anyone be able to lend a hand with a dry place to get the job done as a surprise for her a bit nearer to her birthday?

Cheers guys

I've done the TMI seat covers before on a bug. Not to bad but it does depend on whether the spikes that hold the material in place snap off or not. Mine were ok but they are viciously sharp so be prepared to spear yourself a few times!

you will need to do it some place that has power as you will need a hairdryer in order to warm the covers so that they will go on, especially the seat backs as they are a very tight fit.

I covered just the front seat and this took virtually the whole day but most of this time was spent stripping the seat back completely and spraying it (very worthwhile doing though, but you can get away with spraying the visible bits). The TMI seat paddin sets are foam so go on in seconds - the seat backs on mine were not too bad so i just replaced part of the padding.

Doors panels are a doddle and the TMI ones are great quality, simply put in the trim clips pop out any sections that need popping out (ie ashtray on beetles or door handles - these are precut but not removed in case they are not needed), cut the vinyl to match (very easy as the popout section is the correct shape and place) and fit.

Seat before (was MUCH rougher than it looked in this pic)

And after (bit of crappy photo i'm afraid)

Thanks for the reply

It would seem then that the 5 hours suggested by one company may be a tad optimistic then!

Might be best to give her some big pressies then try and fit them at home together.

To be fair if you are just replacing the covers and not doing anything to the frames i would say 5 hours is about right. The actual replacing of the covers doesn't take too long, the main time involved is ensuring they are on all straight and there are no creases.

The problem i had is that there was loads of chipped paint and some small bits of surface rust and i knew i wouldn't be happy putting new covers onto scabby looking frames. Because i was going from black frames to silver beige as well this meant i had to take the frames back to bare metal and primer them which took a lot of time, plus i seperated the springs from the base in order to strip it back properly, and the side panel took a bit of prep to get it looking nice and straight.
Which year bug is this for by the way?

As Paulski says - if you dont want to do anything to the frames then you should be able to re-cover them in a few hours.
I could od them for you if you like?

It's a 1971 stock 1300 beetle paulski.

As for the seats I'm not intending to do anything to the frames, unless absolutly necassry as it is not a show car, just replace the covers and if I can afford it the carpets as well.

You've got an email Mark
