It's a saab thing. 900's (old and new style) had a common gearbox fault as do 93's, 9000's have a common fault with the direct ignition that's why all AA vans carry a spare, 95's have the engine fault and also the turbo's on the 95's fall apart faster than a chocolate teapot on the surface of the sun!!!
I wonder why they are going up the swanee faster than a rat up a drain pipe???

Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction.
which means there are loads of early 9-5s on fleabay and in breakers yards that are perfectly good apart from knackered engines. You should be able to pick a set of seats up fairly easily and they are like driving in armchairs 
You may have to adapt or have a set of sub frames made up but they will be worth it.
