Never owned a T4 but I've been driven around in them for years as VW seems to be the choice of Sound Recordists. I have to agree that the Normally aspirated engines are guttless. The TDi's do go better.... but on the other hand there's more to go wrong??? So do you do for the Tortoise or the Hare???

Re: quick question..

TDi would probably be better on the fuel as its pulls the load of the van better etc etc....I think you can get a 2.2 in TDi form, that would be the puppy to go for. All the T4's had the same gearbox as far as I'm aware so you'll have the same gearing regardless of model choice (The new T5 1.9's use the same gearbox as the old T4 but the new 2.5 T5 has a new 6 speed box).

My old man has a 1.9 'R' reg (97) T4, it had an engine replacement before he got it at 90 something thousand miles, but in the 8 or so years he's had it, its been fine with only a couple of minor niggles, water pump, alternator etc same as you would get on the normally aspirated one and its now approaching 200,000.

Given the choice of 1.9 or 2.2 I'd go with the 2.2 if your looking for economy and hauling power (family, camping gear etc etc). A guy over the road from our workshop has a 2000 year T4 2.2TDi he says he gets high 40's on economy. He was sorly tempted to take that over his 67 Split on their 3 week trip around the alps because of its comfort and economy. Its a panel van however so the rest of the family probably would have ended up with a Vitimin D deficiency due to lack of light, so he took the split instead.haha!!

I had an N reg 2.4 non turbo type 4 minibus. Reliable as hell, did 35 to the gallon, and quick enough, but nothing amazing.
A bit different to my present 2.5 tdi 174bhp auto.... she goes like stink, but i'm lucky to get 30 to the gallon, even on the single occasion that i drove carefully !! lol....I'd have a drive, see what you think, and see if the rest of the van feels right before you discard it.
