Petronix Ignitor

I have a 78 Bay Automatic 2.0L

After reading a magazine article I am considering uprating to a petronix ignitor and flamethrower coil.

Are these as good as the article suggests?

Apparently you get greater fuel economy and power. Also you dont need to replace your points ever again.

Anyone out there who can fit one?

Cheers

Mike

They are a contraversial subject on many other forums but I'll give you my two-pennies worth and leave you to make up your own mind.

I have them fitted to my wifes bug and to my 412. They have proved to be reliable for the 5 years in the bug and 2 years in the 412.

As you have said, they mean you don't have to fit points and do the little bits associated with that routine job but you still need to service the rest of the engine as per schedule etc...obviuosly emoticon

However as to the increased power and fuel consumption that is another questionable area. Any difference is possibly down to the fact the old points have just been replaced and you would probably see the same improvement if you had used new points instead of the Pertronix set up. Does that make any sense?

As for fitting them they are easy. They come with good instructions and the only thing to be very careful of is connecting the wires correctly on the ignitor module to the coil and possibly pushing the bit onto the distrubter shaft (that is just a job of lining it up correctly though).

Depending where you are located I would have thought someone could come and help you do the job if you needed the moral support.

Just a thought....

If you're pertronix ignition fails you have to either have another unit spare in the car or a complete set of points, condenser and coil as you cannot use standard points on a pertronix coil.

A good middle ground is stock coil, stock points and a velleman electronic ignition kit.

The kit uses your points as a switch rather than a load bearing device, so they will never pit and should last for years without the need for replacement. Oh and should the velleman kit fail all you need in your glovebox is a condenser.
