God damn that fillers plain scary!!! What did you strip the panels with out of interest as i'm taking the bonnet back to bare metal at the moment (using nitromors and sanding discs) and its starting to bore me now! Wondered if there was anything quicker.
By the way should be able to drop the bits off we discussed on either wednesday or thursday if thats cool with you.

I'm using a soft pad on a mop machine (kind of like a 9inch grinder but much slower rotation) I'll get exact specs possibly manufacturer and post it tomorrow. It cuts straight through filler and if you've only got paint on there it doesn't take long with this little beaut (probably do the outside of a beetle bonnet in about an hour if not quicker) but you do have to then go back over the metal with a DA to finish the surface off ready for primer.
I've been warned off nitromors in the past especially for panels with more than one skin and/or liped edges etc as the solution, if left on the metal can eat the metal out like rust. Best only used on flat panels where you know you've got it all off again or not at all. The flat pad does a great job on large panels, and we always use clean and strip wheels or the good old fashioned wire wheel for the more complex areas i.e around seams, edges etc etc.

Yeah Wednesday is ok, I'm only around Thursday morning this week though.

Yeah Wednesday is ok, I'm only around Thursday morning this week though.
Will have to take a look at the soft pad as i'm using a sanding disc on a polisher as well. Don't worry i'm keeping the nitromors well away from any seam or tight pressing, only reason i've been using it is to make sure i don't piss of the neighbours with the noise of the sander.

Well I've managed to find some time to do a little bit more to rusty beast!
After finding that the lower rear pillar and the upper-mid sections of the same pillar were rotten, things started to get drastic. Firstly, out came the engine, and then off came the lower part of the pillar and the rear section of the chassis rail as this was found to be rotten from after the engine out to the back of the van. I made sure I took as many measurements as I could and also kept the old piece for reference when sorting the new bit.
What followed next was the slow job of unpicking the rear left corner skin from the 'new' panels I have so that I could then get to the rear pillar and take the relevant section out.
Once I had the repair piece measured and adjusted to fit, I bolted the rear valance and engine lid back on to check the gaps etc, all looked good so it got welded on. I gave the part under the battery tray a good clean over and rust treatment to get the last of the nasties as it's easier to do now than when the tray is in.
Once that was in place, I started on the Upper pillar section. Now handily this is in two halves so all I did was remove the outer half to expose the inside of the inner half, gave it a run over with the wire wheel, some rust killer and a liberal coat of paint, then set at getting hold of the replacement piece from the 'new' panel set up. This painstaking task done, it was ready to weld on. I forgot to take some 'in progress' photos here so you'll have to take my word for it.
Not looking too bad now and I'm happy in the fact that I know it has been rebuilt using the original pattern parts as I could have just as easily made a box section myself to put in its place.
The pillar now fixed, on went the battery tray, and I then set about offering the new corner skin up to get it cut to size. Its pretty much there now I just have some final trimming to do to make it fit exactly, but I thought I'd offer up the rear arch with it as well and dream of the day it's all done, (check out the funking sound system, oh gladly the days of home stereo speaks in cars have long gone, but.....hmmmm??.....I wonder!.....Nah the stereo in it is big enough anyway!!).
I have the same thing to do to the other side, but before this the job priorities have been shifted around as my 'new' front clip has arrived and is taking up far too much room, so this will be the next job to get the front and the arches on. For this I will (hopefully) be roping some of you into helping lift it into place, you know who you are!!haha!!
Anyway that's it for now, until the missus goes off on tour again, then my time is free to play!!
