10 ways to see a ghost (In the East that is)

1 - Adopt the eyes of the dead.
2 - Attempt suicide during pregnancy.
3 - The Chinese plate.
4 - Late dinner alert.
5 - The mask of the dead.
6 - Comb hair at midnight.
7 - Hide and seek at midnight.
8 - Peekastoop.
9 - The forbidden shade.
10 - Feign death.

Anyone who has seen the "Eye" trilogy will know these as the trilogy follows the 10 steps to seeing the dead, all are based on actual beliefs in Thailand/China/Japan...

1 - Adopt the eyes of the dead literally means look through the eyes of the dead, which in modern times means anyone who has had a corneal transplant should be able to see ghosts as they are effectively seeing through a dead persons eyes.

2 - Attempting suicide during pregnancy, in the East they believe every spirit is re-born, they enter a baby as it's born and their memories are erased, the ghost chooses beforehand who to enter and protects the infant as best it can, attempting suicide whilst carrying a new host will force the ghost to appear to prevent the suicide.

3 - The Chinese plate, quite simply a plate pushed around a board containing phrases/letters.....yep it's a ouija board.

4 - Late dinner alert, Ghosts are said to congregate around crossroads and as ghosts don't eat they are eternally hungry, tapping eating utensils on a dish or plate at a crossroads at night will call the ghosts to dinner where they will eat the food on offer (you don't actually have to provide food as they eat ethereal food)....don't stop tapping until they leave though as it is said they will see you if you stop and haunt you.

5 - The mask of the dead, rub the soil from a coffin across the eyes and you will be able to see the dead, the Chinese also use prayers written on paper over the eyes to reveal hidden ghosts.

6 - Comb hair at midnight, simple this one -a ghost will appear in the mirror.

7 - Hide and seek at midnight, A ghost will join the game and being invisible will hide one of the players from the rest, a black cat is said to be able to find the hidden player, once found the ghost will reveal itself as if it had been caught.

8 - Peekastoop, bend over and look back between the legs and ghosts can be seen (possibly due to the rush of blood to the head), this is actually done at ceremonial Thailand burials so the family can watch the departed leave.

9 - The Forbidden shade, Ghosts will try to steal your shadow if you try to shade yourself indoors, so opening a sunshade or umbrella indoors will result in ghosts appearing.....now you know where opening an umbrella indoors got it's bad rep.

10 - Feign death, sorry but you have to go the whole way, wear a used burial suit, have the face make-up of a corpse and surround yourself with candles/incense sticks ...then maybe the dead will allow you to walk their plane as one of their own, having someone ring a bell near you will open a doorway back to the living.

Obviously anyone trying any of the above does so at their own risk and it is merely here for interests sake.....oddly most have Western counterparts.

Thats realy interesting 0706, if you know any other cultural beliefs on the dead, please post them or let us know where to find them, I thinnk it would be a facinating topic to have here on the forum.

Seeing ghosts in mirrors is also well known. Some people cover their mirrors (well known in Southern US) after someone dies in the house, or even before if they expect it, so their spirit won't go the the reflected light of the mirror and get stuck or remain to haunt them.

A related belief is one should open a window or door at least a crack so the departing soul may escape, or it may linger a long time where it has died. I recently read about this on a nurses' forum of ghost stories. With the proliferation of ghosts seen and felt at hospitals and nursing homes where there are no windows that open, I can believe this one might have something to it!
