There are shedloads of images of triangular planes around, often rumoured to be a US developed stealth recon vehicle known as 'Aurora'. There's no reason at all why this should be assumed to be of extraterrestrial origin.

It's descriptive of a process whereby the pattern recognition parts of the brain try to impose order on random parts of a scene, and tell you that you're seeing something familiar that is't actually there - imagine seeing a volkswagen beetle shape in a cloud, for example, or a face in the static of a detuned TV.

Apparently the US government posted reports in local newspapers about sightings of UFOs during the testing of their new aircraft to take people's attentions away from the fact that the UFOs were new planes being tested.

I had heard similar things before, and also that the UK military tended to practice denial of all sightings because it meant people were far more likely to go off on their own tangents.
I do remember wondering about this years back when a couple of squaddies broke a story about the close up sighting they had whilst on patrol in MoD controlled woodland. The report had audio clips, rough video - the works.. quite unusual for anything connected with the military and occurring during manouevres. The cynic in me was wondering what it was designed to draw attention away from
