New Law out in MAY
As the new law comes to effect in May protecting reputable mediums & the public from fraudulent mediums, what are peoples oppinions on it.
I hear that when BBC News conducted an investigation on psychics, they said that they saw a few readers who had put a disclaimer saying that "For entertainment only". Will this effect the public deciscions on visiting a medium & believing what they are told by one?
What are the psychics views on the new law & will it effect them working with the public.

Good.
If you're going to make a fantastic claim you'd better be able to back it up, otherwise you have no right to assume that others should have to take you seriously. There are far too many frauds out there preying on people who are already desperate or in a fragile state of mind, and it needs to stop.

Re: New Law out in MAY
i agree with some sort of regulation to mediumship etc. I use some level of mediumship during investigations etc, but had chosen a long time ago, not to continue with the 'platform demonstration' area of mediumship, as i came across too many fakes that really angered me, that someone could take advantage of (usually) vulnerable people like that.
Hope this isnt going off the beaten track here, but one thing that has come to my attention lately, is that more and more mediums/psychic etc are applying for some sort of liablity insurance for when they do various card readings and things of that nature. A lady i worked with recently who did various types of angelcard readings had spent quite alot on an insurance for the readings, as she had had a bitter experience of someone trying to sue her. Fortunately her solicitor got her out of it, but it scared the heck out of her! I use Celtic cards for guidance & counselling, they are NOT predictive, just get you to analyse yourself with tasks & challenges...but nevertheless, it made me do some enquiring about liability insurance for these as well as all the other things i need insurance for...arghhh!! most of the money seems to go on all the insurances i need nowadays!!

Re: New Law out in MAY
We have said that we wont discredit anyone on this site, so we are unable to comment, incase we get beaten up.... :-)
We have had enough though, anything we have posted on here has been the truth & some are obviously affraid of the truth or are in denial. If anyone else posts their experiences on here & names certain people, that is not our responsibility as those comments are peoples individual opinions.
I personally welcome this new law as it is about time that there is something out there to help protect the people who are vunerable, people who have lost loved ones & will believe anything that they are told even if it is not true. I have got nothing against the true medium & I do know some, but it is unfortunate for the genuine ones out there because there are so many that are out to make a quick buck & will tell you what they think you want to hear, that this will undoubtable cause much trouble for them.
Why don't these overnight mediums go back to thier day job & leave it to the proffesionals who know what their doing. Afterall this isn't a game, you dealing with peoples lives & feelings.

Re: New Law out in MAY
well said bmphoto, i totally agree...other people like counsellors, psychotherapists, psychiatrists etc who deal with people, their emotions and their inner most feelings and vulnerability have to work under strict codes of ethics...it should be the same for mediums and psychics, especially those who do platform demonstrations and do tarot readings etc...
I know i am MORE than happy to have my day job work, EFT & other meridian energy therapies, life guidance and counselling work, covered by the code of ethics of the National Council of Psychotherapists...so even though i sometimes use mediumship within my work, I am always aware of the codes and boundaries I am bound by...and that also gives the public the confidence that they will be treated with respect and not be taken advantage of in any way...
BUT, what i want to know is...if/when this law comes out:
WHO is bringing the law out?
how is it going to be policed, as it were?
how will anyone be able to prove or disprove someone is true or fake?....

Read the Government's responseThe Fraudulent Mediums Act 1951 will be repealed from April 2008 by the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2007 (CPRs) which implement the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD).
The CPRs include rules prohibiting conduct which misleads the average consumer and thereby causes, or is likely to cause him to take a transactional decision he would not have taken otherwise.
Although the average consumer would arguably not be misled by a person who claims he is able to contact the dead, such conduct would still be unfair under the CPRs if it deceives the average member of (i) the group to which it is directed, or (ii) a clearly identifiable group of consumers who are particularly vulnerable to this type of practice.
Unlike the Act, there is no requirement in the CPRs to prove an "intent to deceive". This means that where practices are aimed at vulnerable consumers or average members of particular groups, it should be easier to take action against fraudulent mediums than under the Act.
The CPRs will be enforced by both civil (injunctive) action and criminal sanctions.
Further information on the UCPD and the CPRs is available on BERR's website (new window).

It seems that the Government will be re-enforcing an old law from the 1950's. I think it might be a little dangerous, but it seems as though it will be the general public who it will be left to to report the so called fake medium. They will have to have proof of what the medium sadi though, so it might mean that you will be able to insist that your reading can be recorded.
