Orbs Part 1 - Creating the orb

There is a new article in our research section containing part 1 of an experiment which aims to find the truth about orbs.

To see it please visit the research page or Click Here

It's an interesting approach, but I think you're going to hit one major problem - nobody sets out to create orbs on film but does so when matter of some form drifts in very close to the lens. If this happens in the middle of an experiment (as it may have done on one of your photos) then the entire experiment is flawed.. you can't guarantee that the images you get are solely the result of the water spray. Maybe in a completely sterile room, but definitely not in the open.

There is another point to consider which is that the size of the orbs captured tends be a direct result of the contaminants being immediately in front of the lens, so you may be working from a range way outside the area in which reflections happen. It's Like Father Ted's 'this is a little cow, and that's a big one a long way away' line emoticon

Your right, and this is a difficult one. I think the only way to make it more credible is by being able to demonstrate the same test which produces the same result again and again.

Yup, that'd definitely be a coup - have you got any ideas for how to pin down the cause of a given orb? It'd be hard to corroborate the results from two synched cameras too because the appearance of a dust orb (for example) varies relative to the position of the lens and flash so there's no guarantee that it'd appear on two photographs at the same time.

I think that one of the interesting ways to check this would be to get a constant flow of particulates or an area where they were unavoidable, and examine the results from photos using different flash timings. If you can find a timing that always avoids orbs where every other one captures them, you have a good result from the opposite direction to the one expected emoticon

Have you tried a similar experiment Kuang?

I haven't, I'm afraid. I'm certain for myself that orbs are perfectly natural and explainable artefacts so I haven't looked into them any deeper than my existing knowledge of the standard causes. I find that the circumstances needed to create them consistently are so vague that it's almost impossible to draw any concrete conclusions, even though taken as a whole they can be predictable - it's a bit like fluid dynamics, but with camera optics emoticon
