Why Do We Dream?
Hello everyone
A few years ago, when i was still at school, i had an idea. I was thinking about dreams and the reason we dream.
The key to every question in the paranormal is WHY? i mean everything in nature has a reason...monkeys have long tails for balancing, moles have big claws to sift through dirt, trees grow tall to reach above other plants and get the most sunlight....it all happens for a reason.
So i decided that saying dreams have meaning, hidden messages etc is all non-sense and there must be a reason for it.
After much research i came to the conclusion that dreams are designed to keep you alive when you sleep. Think about it, what do you do when you sleep? not alot really you just breathe, your heart beats but in the day you can see things, smell, touch, hear, interact, love and hate things....all of this creates tiny chemical reactions in your brain all the time, but if you suddenly are taken away from all this, wont the brain just stop working?
It's like a car, if you keep using it then it starts fine every time, but if you leave it for along time and then suddenly try and start it and expect it to work as well as it did 3 months ago when you last used it, then it doesen't.
Firstly when you being to "nod-off" you may notice things popping into your head, like flashes of images and that your brain is doing all the thinking for you...well i believe that this is your brain sifting through the data in your head looking for something that triggers a good reaction...like the image of the friend you have a crush on or alternatively the image of something very scary. It may also pick something fresh in your head, like a movie you just watched, as you are still thinking about it.
Once your brain has found something which has a good reaction then you fall into the next sage of sleep where your body is totaly relaxed, your rate of breathing drops incredibly low and your mind does all the work for you.
Because of this your dreams seem very real, because your brain is trying to re-create the conditions you experience when awake, hence why you can feel, hear, smell, see and even why you experience emotions. Sometimes it is so intense that your nervous system accidentaly kicks up again and your body starts to move, known as sleep walking.
Anyway this has been a long post, thanks for reading it i hope it has changed the way you think about dreams, and answered all of your questions about the dreams you have.

Actually, no is the answer, because the brain produces far more electrical energy whilst you sleep than it does when your awake.
To be more precise, there are two stages to sleep, deep sleep (where we dont dream) and REM or rapid eye movement sleep, it is during REM sleep that we dream and the brain produces about 5 times the energy it does when awake. If you measure brain waves on a EEG, the waves (Delta Waves as they are known) come at about 3 per sec during deep sleep as apposed to 60-70 per sec during REM sleep. Blood pressure, heart rate and breathing can also change dramatically during REM sleep.
And to protect itself during sleep the body becomes paralysed to prevent injury from flailing about etc.

Re: Why Do We Dream?
Dru, i know this, and my point is, is the energy/activity in the brain increased because of the dreams? Would it still be 5 times as high if we didn't dream?
And our bodies aren't always paralyzed, hence sleepwalkers.

I'm by no means an expert on sleep but i would assume that yes it would, there is some evidence that REM sleep evolved before dreams, see: http://www.webmd.com/content/article/35/1728_92635

Yes people do sleepwalk, you are quite right but this is due to a weakness or disruption to the brain stem and motor activities are not prevented.

Re: Why Do We Dream?
Just think of it as kind of a mental screensaver for the brain.

Re: Why Do We Dream?
Dreams certanly are a curious topic. Why indeed do we dream, some dreams that we have make complete sense when you analyse them yet others are so jumbled up, they make no sense whatever.
Some people say that dreams are a way of your brain organising events that you have experienced through the day. The brain is a very complex organism & we only use a very small part of it in our every day living. Research has enlightened us towards just some of the possibilities that we can accomplish by training our brains to use more of the dormant areas, such as Telekinesis, Mediumship, Telepathy.
Intersting hey!
All of the above are addressed at sometime during paranormal research into the spirit realm. Is it all just a manufactured phenomina caused by increased brain activity or are the dead realy trying to communicate with us?
Will we ever realy discover the truth behind why do spirits realy roam the earthly planes & interfere with the living!
