A BIG thank you to The Magic Attic - based at Sharpe's. Mr Graham Nutt and the team for the research on the 17 year old girl who died in the 1800's at the haunted home for LivingTV. As they will be filming at The Magic Attic in the next week. And one or two members were asked to be involved in the reconstruction of the ghosts that have been seen at the location.

Re: SPI on TV..... FROM BURTON MAIL NEWS PAPER.

Letting the spirits rest alone in peace
by LAURIE DEVITT
THE truth behind dozens of ghostly tales is set to be uncovered by one of South Derbyshire's most popular paranormal teams.

Those who have always wondered whether the ghost stories their grandparents or parents told them are to be believed are being urged to get in touch with Swadlincote Paranormal Investigations (SPI).

The team, formed in 2002 after a group of friends decided to start filming and recording strange or unexplained goings-on in the town's pubs and homes, is now opening up members' expertise to others in a bid to help not just them, but the 'spirits' too.

Member Simon Deacon, who is also a photographer at the Mail, said: "Our main objective is to help the spirits to rest and let the living let them.

"We try to find out why the spirits are here, because if they are supposed to go to a better place then why do they keep coming back?

"A new thing we are now doing is that we want people to come forward with their myths and legends and we want to find out if they are true.

"There are six to seven of us who will go and interview people and do research from that.

"We want them to post it on our website, which is already getting 300 hits a day."

The group is currently filming with Living TV at locations in Church Grelsey and High Street, Swadlincote, for a new television show, and has worked with some of the country's top mediums including Diane King, from Newhall, and presenter of ITV's Haunted Homes Mark Webb & Ian Lawman, Medium from Most Haunted.

Sunce their formation almost six years ago, the group has grown in popularity, with hundreds of people signing up to take part in their ghost walks.

Fellow member Stephen Griffiths said: "We have been doing some work at Sharpe's Pottery, the Angel Inn, and the American Diner, in Church Gresley, Gresley Old Hall and the Flower House, in High Street, Swadlincote.

"We research the history of the buildings and looking at people living with the spirits and try to put them at rest.

"It can be emotionally draining."

To post your tales, or to find out more, visit www.swadlincoteparanormal.co.uk, or telephone 07725 321774.

Re: SPI on TV. From Burton mail ..

Over the years with the likes paranormal Investigations have been brought into the public eye with the Ghostbusters movies and more recently Most Haunted. But have you ever wanted to know what its like to be a real Paranormal Investigator, well now you can with this exclusive interview with Swadlincote’s very own specialists in the paranormal – The Swadlincote Paranormal Investigation Team (SPI).

SPI formed in 2002 when a small group of people started investigating the paranormal in an attempt to feed their own curiosity about the unknown. Now the group regularly venture off to go head to head with apparitions, spectres, phantoms and even poltergeist as they search allegedly haunted locations to discover the reasons behind spirits and their inability to rest.

Some of you may think that paranormal investigations is just a bunch of stooges using a Ouija board in some darkened room, sorry to disappoint you, but they are far from it. This fearless group of individuals regularly give up their free time to pursuit these phenomena and to help those who might of have been touched by the spirit realm. The now consisting of Steve Griffiths and Simon Deacon who are both investigators, Richard O’Connor is a researcher, Anita Deacon and Christopher Stevens who tech assistants, Diane King who is the groups resident medium, Helen O’Connor is the teams data collector and then Iain Clarke head cameraman and producer of their DVD’s.

The team always go prepared armed with a list of specialised equipment to help them with their investigations, though the most important tool is their own intuition, without which they would not be the success that they are today. In fact during 2006 and 2007 the group went live broadcasting on the world wide web to audience of over 150,000, have been featured on ITV as two day Halloween special which was hosted by Louella Bailey. The groups activities are now followed by a world wide audience with people regularly logging onto their website from countries across the globe. 2008 seems to be no different as their accomplishments have even drawn the attention of Living TV and they will be being featured on a new paranormal series hitting the screens in late may of this year.

A like many tools of the trade there are some you should use and there are some that should never be used, like the Ouija Borad. Mail photographer and paranormal investigator said: ”Ouija boards are unpredictable and uncontrollable. You may be able to contact spirits in the spirit realm, but have no control on what could come through with it. We have been to too many places and seen so many lives that have been messed by people who played around with them”. Once the team recall as what was probably their scariest location ever visited. It was a private house in Chesterfield where the occupant was being terrorised by a poltergeist. Every night the occupant would go to bed & in the middle of the night he would feel icy cold hands grab him by his ankles and he would get dragged down the bed. The night that the team investigated, two of the team was in the bedroom at the time that this would occur and the EMF meter that was lying on the bed suddenly went off the scale, the laser thermometer read a temperature of almost 1000’C, then the two night vision cameras that had been set up in the room were knocked off their mounts simultaneously. During the investigation it was discovered that the exact time that this attack would happen was the exact time that the occupant had previously opened a Ouija Board.

The actual investigation is nothing like people might think it is. First of all you would walk the site and conduct base line readings, so that you have got something to go one later in the night if something happens, this might mean documenting things you would probably not even think of like what the weather is, the moons phase and even if there are any lay lines running beneath the building. Then interview any witnesses & then it will be time to bring in the medium. Conduct a walk-round with them; documenting all the information they pick up on, we tend to use a Dictaphone, night vision camera & a pen & paper. Then place trigger object and locked off cameras in the area’s that the medium has highlighted as possible hot spots. Most equipment used is not to find paranormal activity but eradicated possible explanations. The main part of the investigations begins once you manage to get back and collate all the findings from the night & research the location, by means of history of the location.

Not all investigations that might have paranormal activity will end up with a clearance, that would only be a last resort, that is if it is causing a disruption to the living residents, you must first establish if they just want to communicate or if they just want to move on, but are afraid. You have to be very patient as an investigator allot of the time you just have to sit and wait, this can be from cold damp basements to cobweb filled attics. The super natural can only be contemplated once the logical has been eradicated. Most so-called hauntings can be explained via high magnetic fields, infrasound, dust and even water molecules. It is also important that the medium is told nothing of the location as this could contaminate the results.

Over the years, they have also teamed up with small screen celebrities like Mark Webb - Investigator from Haunted Homes, Richard Felix - Historian and Phil Whyman - Investigator from Most Haunted, local best selling author Jacky Newcombe and Most Haunted’s newest recruit local historian Lesley Smith.

When asked if they were more like Ghostbusters or Most Haunted, Simon said “Ghost busters capture spirits, we want to help them pass over, not capture them. Most Haunted, they have their own unique approach to investigations, which differs very much from our own, they have their own objectives and we have ours. Ours being to help put spirits to rest and allow the living to let them.

Over the years we have investigated or participated in investigations at many high profile locations like TG Greens Pottery, The Mail Offices, The Newton Park Hotel, The Galleries of Justice to name but a few.

Swadlincote Paranormal Investigations hold a series of events throughout the year, which are open to the general public. If you are interested in joining with them or just want to know more about the team, visit their website on www.swadlincoteparanormal.co.uk
