Burton General Hospital
For those who could remember the old Burton General Hospital. It was a freaky place to work there, specialy asa porter on nights as you hadto work alone., which I did on many occasions during my stint there.
Here are a few of the stories that I have experienced or have been told. If anyone has any further information about these reports. I would love to hear from you, or any of the houses which have been built on this site.
Ward 5:
On the old ward, there had been many reports of what the staff & patients had called the Grey lady. I know what you are thinking, Grey Lady, it's allways a grey lady. Well, thats what everyone who worked or had the fortune to stay on the ward had experienced had saw. Patients sleeping on the ward, specially in the end room or staff called the concservatory had seen her the mmost, she used to go round & look over the patients in the beds, infact I don't know if this is true, but on nights, specially the weekend, they used to move peolple out of the conservatory area & lock it up, as that is when most occurances happened. Other patients said that whilst they were in bed in the middle of the night, when it was quietest, they could hear her walking up & down the corridor. Night staff had also commented on seeing shaddows passing the office door & upon inspection, there would be no one there.
Eye Ward:
On the old Eye ward which was situated above the main entrance to the hospital off Moor Street. Again on nights the staff used to bring the lift upto the top floor & open the door. This was done mainly for security, as then no one could enter the ward without them shutting the door or going down stairs to unlock the outer doors. Anyway. On several occasions the staff had herd the lift doors shut & the lift go down to the ground floor. Bear in mind, this could of only been shut from upstairs as the doors are manual.
Cosultants or Maids Corridor:
This corridor is situated directly above what was the lodge, this corridor ran again along Moor Street. On nights, resident doctoors who were oncall. hated to sleep in the rooms along there as they would often hear footsteps outside their doors & on occasions hear someone knock on the door, again upon inspection, there was never anyone there. There has also been several reports by the oncall staff sleeping in, that have had the feeling that they have been followed when twalking along the corridor & heard footsteps walking behind them, when there has been no one there.
Theatre Offices:
One night I was working a night shift & went upto the theatre office in order to collect the consultants theatre reports & take them down to the lodge for collection the next day. On this occasion, I went up, it must of been around midnight & when I got to the office I could clearly hear what sounded like a party going on inside the room. There was music, talking & general movement inside. I kncked on the door to enter the room to find out how long they were going to be in the room as I was locking up the hospital. When I knocked on the door it went deadly silent. I tried to open the door & it was locked. I had the master keys on me at the time I was locking up the exterior doors & when I opened the door, the lights were out & there was no one inside. This freaked me out & left the area faster than a bullet out of a gun.
Porters Lodge:
Another instance comes to mind, when I was working ight shift. It was a in the early hours of the morning & I was sitting watching a film on the TV, when the tranquil evening was broken by someone pounding on the door. This door led out to the haematology department was locked & the only people that ventured into the area behind the door at that time of night, was myself & the oncall haematologist. I opened the thinking that the haematologist was in some sort of trouble, upon opening the door, there was no one there. I called the Emergency Admissions Department to see if the haematologist had been called out & they said that they had no reason to call him for the last few hours & the one on call that night lived locally & was not sleeping in.
Nursing Home:
One of my duties I hadto do on night shift was to collect the Doctors Notes from the day & return them to the lodge for collection the next day. I had allready been round & conducted my security checks & collected the bags & had nothing un-usual to report. Later that night on my second security check, we have to go check all the doors we had locked up to see if there had been any disturbancies. On arrival to the office on the first floor, I could hear a strange noise coming from inside the office area. I searched several rooms & go through several locked doors, until I came to an office & the hot tap was turned on full & the room was full of steam. I had no explination to this as I had mentioned, there was no reports of un-usual activities on my earlier security run & I had to go through several locked doors to get to the office & there was no problems reported with the water earlier that day or infact the following day.
The Mortuary:
Funny enough. That would be a place that you would expect there to be allot of activity, but I have been in there on several occasions in the middle of the night on my own awaiting the ambulances to bring in corpses or the night porter to bring down the deceased from the District Hospital for Post Mortem. I have never had any unexplained experiences. Sure I have felt un easy, but who wouldnt. Its the whole thing of where you are that would make most feel uneasy. If anything it allways felt quite at ease. On occasion you might feel that there is someone watching over you. The mortician allways said that I thought funny, yet true. It wasn't the dead you had to worry about, it was the living.
