Gresley Old Hall
Hi, my name is Angie, and I have a bit of a connection with Gresley Old Hall.
In the early 1920s, my Mum lived there with her parents and sister. They were the Jackson family, and they rented the front part of the Hall. A family called Amer lived at the back. There are a few tales that went the rounds, but some of these things were explained away by my grandparents....however....
My Mum had to spend 6 weeks alone in isolation in one of the small bedrooms next to the ****-lofts when she had scarlet fever. Following that 6 weeks she would never go further up the spiral stairs than the 3rd or 4th step. Last year I took a few parties round the Hall from a van meet that I organised there, and one lady said that she could see a small girl sitting on the 3rd step....afraid to go any higher. This lady didn't know about my Mum.
On the top floor at the front...the right hand room as you look at the building, there is a room blocked off. It is said that a maid burnt to death in there as she watched over the children.....and following that the room was sealed. The lady I took in when reaching that landing said her face was burning,.....and it felt like her skin was coming off. She came from London, and didn't know the history of the Hall, and didn't know about the maid. Others too felt the burning on their faces.
By the third party to go up there, there was a cold blast of air that came at us. And it came from the room on the top floor to the left of the stairs. I had twice walked into there, and on the third attempt there was a wall of cold in the doorway. Again, others felt it. From then on, each time I shone to torch at that doorway the cold would come down at us, and stay with us till we left. On going back up, the temp would be normal again.
Folowing the incidents with the cold air, a few folks noticed when they got back home that odd things were happening. I had a spate of bad luck, and this didn't stop till I put a couple of Bibles around my house.
Now I've been up there when I was 14....and I saw and remember the old panneling and where it was. The pens were still in the lofts, and in one corner of the loft was the remains of a harp. My gran said that my Grandad made the harp, and it used to stand in the hall, but they had to leave it when they left cos it was too big for their new house. And I went up there a few years ago with my Mum....the caretakers kindly let my Mum see it again. But why I should be so affected by it now I really don't know, cos before when I've been in there I felt nothing. But something was there last year....something that wanted us to leave, as it either followed us to the entrance or it chased us out.
I'd like to go in with the paranormal team to see what they make of it....and I would love to see that blocked off room opened up......

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Hello Ang
I find your story fascinating, i am keen to hear more about the maid who burnt to death and the bloked off room.
There is a room which says "Danger do not enter" which i think is dated 1982, and it was in this room which i witnessed an apparition of a lady on a visit there. I would be amazed if it was the same room.
I do find it a truly fascinating place and its a shame that we have had to declare it unfit for large groups of people. Can you tell us even more about the history?

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Hi Richard. The room which is blocked off has the doorway bricked up. Word has it that it was bricked up just after the fire. It looks like the window is boarded up on the inside too.
Stand on the little square landing with the 2 steps to the rear bedrooms in front of you and on your right are about 5 or 6 steps. If you turn and go up those steps....the ones that are coming off the wall....in front of you there is a room. To the right of that, if you are still on those stairs, is another room, who's window is the top right hand one if you look at the front of the Hall. If you look across the wall, towards the window, you can clearly see where the door to that room is bricked up.
There was a room that was dangerous cos it had a concrete floor that had sunk quite a way....that was my Grandads workroom where he made bits of furniture etc...and it had a huge big work bench in there. But that has been restored now, so it won't be that one. I can only imagine that the room you mention will be one one of the very top floors....either where the lofts are, or on the front landing, accessed by the faulty stairs.
I could tell you all about the bloodstains on the first floor landing that were from a man who was stabbed to death on that landing.....and his blood kept showing through the varnish on the panelling and the wooden stairs, no matter what anyone did to cover it....but I won't....

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Oh do tell!
I know which doorway you mean, the apparition i saw was in the doorway opposite and she was facing the bricked up room. Do you by any chance know if the floor of that room opposite the bricked up doorway was once lower then it is now?

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Do you know Richard, you have just sent a shiver down my back.....
I've never been afraid of the Hall, and have known things about it....almost lived it through my family....and never been scared to go in there. But remember I told about the cold that came down from a doorway and followed/chased us out of the Hall? It came from the one facing the bricked up room...the one you saw the lady in....
I don't know about the floor level....it has been like it is now since I first went in...the late 60s.
My Mum and my Aunt are both dead now, so I can't ask them about it....although whether they would have known or not I don't know.
Under where the dance floor is now is where the tunnel was that ran to Gresley Church. My Aunt went down there a little way, but my Mum wouldn't go in, she was too scared. Story has it that the miners found part of it years ago as they were mining there.
My Mum had a kitten, and she shoved the kitten up one of the chimneys.....not while there were any fires though....and my Gran and Grandad kept hearing the kitten meowing, but didn't know where it was, cos the noise kept changing. It came out in one of the other fireplaces, so most of the chimneys must be connected.
I'll tell you when I see you about the blood stains on the landing....
My Mum and Aunt used to have their friends from school round for tea. After the kitten episode, my Grandad realised all the chimneys were connected, and he used to go upstairs and make ghost noises in one of the fire places, and the kids would go beserk....
One night, at the stroke of midnight, there was a loud bang in the hallway at the bottom of the stairs. My Grandad was out shutting the chickens up...his chicken pens were where the bowling green is now.... and my Gran ran outside to him scared to look what the noise was. He came in holding a great big log of wood as a weapon, and opened the living room door into the hallway.....and it was just a piece of the panelling that had fallen off and banged down the stairs.
I've never had any bother with the Hall at all....till I took loads of folks in....and I think that whatever is there just plain doesn't like loads of folks. One or two are ok....it doesn't mind that......but crowds seem to bother it. I think it is the maid that burnt. Her room would have been on the top floor....not in the lofts cos that would have been too far away from the children....so I think she had the room opposite. And I think it is her that comes out of that room, the lady that you saw.....and the cold that kept chasing us out to keep us away from the kids.

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Sitting thinking back over this, I remember there were conflicting stories that went round when I was young as to whether the kids that were in the room burnt with the maid.
The maid/nursery maid/nanny was siting by the large open fire watching over the sleeping children. She wore the clothes of the time, which were long skirts down to the floor. She fell asleep, and some coals dropped out of the fire and set light to her skirts as she slept. She woke on fire, and burnt to death. Some said that the children died in the fire too, and that was why the doorway was walled up....cos the parents never wanted to see the room again.
The servants would have had the rooms in the attic....in the lofts....but the nanny would have been in that top floor room opposite the childrens bedroom, so she could hear them and get to them quickly. I'll bet any money that the lady you saw was the maid.
Someone from the van club took a photo in one of the rear rooms, and there appeared to be the image of a lady wearing a hat, in the mirror which hangs on the wall in there. Someone took it to work and got it blown up, and said that you could clearly see the lady, a small girl next to her, and a little boy sitting on the windowsill. The children that burnt were a boy and a girl.
I'll have to try to get a copy of it.

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Here's the pic....
The image shows a lady's head with a wide brimmed hat.
Blown up more there are children in it too.
And is that an orb on the green door?

Re: Gresley Old Hall
Funny thing about this pic is that, after we had finished going over it on the van site, and the thread was left, I one day when back to the thread....I was the area rep then and I was just looking back over my bit on the forum, and the pic didn't look quite the same somehow.
Every one still said that they could see the lady with the hat....but what I could see was on the left hand side, a lady/person sitting on a chair....and I still see the image in this pic....
