IF there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call? Swadlincote Paranormal Investigations!

Okay it may not have the same ring to it as ‘Ghostbusters’ but the group of eight men and women from across the Burton and South Derbyshire have, since 2004, been investigating all manner of strange and unexplained occurrences across the area.

Founder Stephen Griffiths (you may remember him from such television shows as Living TV’s Living With The Dead) started the group ‘to investigate paranormal phenomena and to try to answer the ultimate question – is there life after death?’

While there doesn’t seem to be a definitive answer to that question here, there are examinations of a range of phenomena such as the appearance of strange orbs of light and mysterious flying rods – ‘cylindrical shaped creatures ranging from just a few inches to over 1m in length which fly through the air at tremendous speeds.’

Contrary to what the sceptics among you might expect, the investigators don’t just blithely assume that such occurences are the result of ghostly goings-on.

In fact, researcher and webmaster Richard O’Connor debunks many of these phenomena, finding a rational explanation for them (the ‘rods’ are, he says, probably ‘nothing more than speedy insects’).

The team members, including The Mail’s own Simon Deacon, each have a profile of their own on the site, complete with a suitably moody-looking photograph.

The site has a news page with details of forthcoming events, the next one being an event entitled Experience The Sixth Sense 2009, to be held at Bretby Conference Centre on November 13, and current research projects.

The group is currently looking for volunteers to take part in an experiment looking at whether people’s ESP (extra sensory perception) skills can be developed over time.

The well-designed site, with a moody nocturnal colour scheme and including photographs taken during the group’s investigations, is well organised, has contact details prominently displayed and boasts a busy and well-used interactive forum.
