Crazey Horse finished
I was watching Trucks on Spike TV last night and they had finished up Crazey Horse the 66 Bronco. I don't watch that show all the time so it may have been a rerun. While I usually would agree with most of what these guys reccomend I found wehat could be a huge bit of bad information on there. The guy was telling how much to torque header bolts and not to overtighten, ( good advice ) then he proceeds to torque them down with about 2 foot of extensions. Now this is the mistake, with all those extensions he was greatly increasing the actual torque he put on the fastener.. I will see if I can dig up the formula but what is happening is this. If you set a torque wrench and use it one handed it is accurate, but when you have to hold the head of the wrench with your other hand in the oppposite direction then that is actually a force being applied to the fastener which is not all being recorded. The longer the extension the more unrecorded torque you are applying. I got the formula from a little pocket sized book that Fel-Pro used to put out with all the torque values and tightening sequences in it. These books were always numbered 487-(year) I don't know if they still print them or not but I have a couple very worn copys in the top of my toolbox that is in storage.
