Re: Gears
I don't have 35s, but I have 33s. I am running a 4:10 R&P in the rear and a 4:09 R&P in the front. Both rearend have new power-locs. I like them a lot when I am pulling logs around or playing around on trails and rocks, but for the highway they are a bit to much. 35s will make a small (better) difference on the highway. The gas is what is killing me.
Prior th my 71 I owned an 82 F250 4X4 with 4:56 R&Ps and 39s. That truck really moved down the highway at eight miles to the gallon. It loved to go 70MPH no problem.
It is cool that you are gathering thoughts about gears and tires. It all really boils down to what you want. Do you want a pavement pounder, a crawler or inbetween. Either which way you will have to sacrafice one good thing for another.

Re: Gears
Right now I have a 4.10 in the rear end. But have another D60 rear with a limited slip with 3.54 gears from a 79f250 that I took the front Dana 60 High pinion out of and put on my 70 crewcab along with some 6in --well 4in lift leafs on my highboy. So I have the lift for 35's or a little bigger but 35 is big enough and now the front gears are 3.54's and rear is 4.10's. I was going to just put the limited slip in the rear with a matching to the new front end set of 3.54's but have gotten feedback that I will have no bottom end grunt with the 35's and 3.54's. I just don't want to be burning too much gas with the 4.10's and have no power with the 3.54's and bottom line is I didn't want to buy 2 new sets of gears and a new clutch pack for the LS rather just change only one end. The truck will mostly be on road and in the dirt on weekends. So I need mileage and Power.......Yes I know the 2 aren't friends but Just posted to get a survey of what people are happy with. Also I have a 460 with a C6 in there-- again not gas friendly. LOL

Re: Gears
Between the two sets you have I would go with the 4:10s. But before I did that, It might be worth the time to swap out the rearend and try out the 3:54 gears out on the highway and on the trail. It wouldn't take but a couple hours to do that. Yes, you will not have much bottom end power with the 3:54s. 4:10s are a good all around gear set. Keep us posted.

Re: Gears
Belive it or not the 79 dana 60 rear is wider than my 70 Dana 60 rear end and the springs in the rear sit on different withs on the pads because of the differance in frame width on the lowboys. So i'd have to change out just the gears. I thought mabey disconnecting the rear driveshaft and just using the front for a highway drive to see what kind of Mileage I'd get with the 3.54's up front and leaving the 4.10's in for the ride. Do you think this would hurt anything and mabey even be accurate at all?

Re: Gears
I don't think it would be accurate. I had to drive my jeep home on day with the rear shaft out. What a bear that was. I don't think doing that would give you the results you are looking for. It sounds like you are going to be changing out gears either which way. I would go with the 4:10s vs the 3:54s.
Get some more opinions before jumping into it.

Re: Gears
I'll probably just run the 4.10's for a while I'm not that motivated after trying to get this thing going and on the road for 2 yrs. I want to just drive it. And when I get around to putting the Limited slip in there I'll have to decide on a ratio. Till then I'll be listening to opinions.

Re: Gears
Last 78 I had, I ran 37's with 4.10/4.09's... was almost perfect. No problem running 70 down the highway, with the 4spd granny and t case low... I don't think I ever wanted it lower.
the 67 Mercury I am putting on a 78 chassis... I am building it now and it has same gear combo and trans/tcase as my last ( although I am planning to use the 352 instead of the 400)
I have been looking to do the D60 front swap(still need one by the way) as I plan to run 39's. Been thinking that 4:56's or even 5:13 would be the way I want to swap if I do swap. I guess we shall see how it goes once it's together.

Re: Gears
I did 4:56s in my last truck with 39" tires. Worked out great. 70+ no problem. I had a beefed up 460 also.

Re: Gears
I built my truck as a daily driver. I put around 20- 25 thousand a year on it. I have 35's, a lift and 3.54's front and back. It cruses 70mph just around 2000rpm. It get's great milage and has a very strong take-off. Used 4wd quite a bit so far and love it. Don't do much mudding. I guess you can't have it all. I think I better get one more truck just for the mud.
