Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
Has anyone done this repair? or have any pointers. Do's or Don'ts (large knuckle Dana 44 front axle)
3500 lb axle rating. I think some people may call these wiper seals.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
The seals that fit around the ball? They are pretty basic. Lightly Scotch brite the surface of the ball to get most of the embedded crap off. Grease the lip of the rubber seal and make sure the felt sits flat while bolting it down.
What type of grease do you have in the knuckles? I need to redo mine also. I was thinking of mixing a 80-140 and wheel bearing grease. This would make a real think grease that wouldn't seep out the seals.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
Thanks for the quick response. How are the seals accessed from under the hub and drum or just bolt on under the truck? Interesting fact on these kits. I recently purchased these kits from a Dana/spicer dealer as they were a little cheeper than Ford. I filled mine with 90w gear oil while under the truck checking all fluids and zerks etc... The L.H.drivers side holds it in ok but the R.H. side runs out as fast as I can put it in.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
A old farmer guy told me to take the fill cap off put in a plug with a zerk and just fill it with grease? I suppose that would work but I think I would rather have it fixed correctly.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
The seals are installed from the back of the knuckle. Unbolt the 10 or 12 (?) bolts that hold the metel retianers on and everything will come out from there including the greese. The new seals should be split so you can get them over the axle tubes.
It would be nice to know of an easy way to get the water drianed out of the knuckle. Condinsation builds up in them if you don't run it in 4x every once and a while. It sets in the bottom bearing and rotts it out.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
That 90 weight is pretty light. Factory calls for 180. My truck had been sitting for a number of years. When I first filled the knuckles they leaked but after a little while the leaking stopped.
Greg (heep70) I still haven't replaced those front axles yet, I'll let you know when I do!

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
The problems I have always found the ball part to be badly pitted right where the wheels are in the straight foreward position. I have also filled them with gun grease. I just took the plug out and filled it up and put the plug back in, no more leak. I was using white lith on everything back then and I used an arctic grade that came in a cartridge for a gun.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
Thanks guys for the info. I will check the ball condition and change the weight of the grease. I guess since I have purchased the seals I will install them as well. Doesn't sound like to bad of a repair.

Re: Dana closed knuckle 4x4 seal replacement ????
I finally found time today to get to those knucke seals. I thought I had better pack the wheel bearings as well. I had access to a hoist today so I took advantage of the opportunity and was I glad I did. After getting it tore down guess what the king pin (upper and lower) bearings were bad. Had a little longer repair time on the truck than I was hoping but should be a big improvment. Also found the R.H. side knuckle seal had been installed backwards at the last repair no wonder it didn't hold grease (seal groove out and felt under seal) I had learned a lot today and it was kinda fun glad I wasn't sitting in my driveway trying to wrestle that iron :)
