2WD ---> 4x4 Conversion -- What's Involved?

Just thinking out loud here, but I have a '68 F-250 I bought for parts (sheet metal is pretty far gone), and was wondering what would be involved in converting the chassis to a 4x4.

Anyone know if this is a bolt-in job, or would it require major rework/fabrication?

Thanx,

es

It can be done, but not without a LOT of work, time and money. You'd be WAY ahead to get a 4x4 chassis and swap the body onto it.

The 4x4 frame has leaf springs in front, the 2x4 has coils. You'd have to cut off the coil spring mounts and figure out the leaf spring mounts. The 2x4 frame has a huge front crossmember that would have to be cut out to acommodate the pumpkin of the front differential, and then you'd have to find a way of reinforcing the frame to compensate. The steering box on the 4x4 frame is mounted in front of the axle, on the 2x4 frame it's mounted behind, and the 2x4 frame isn't set up for the forward-mounted box, so there's some more fabrication.

Trust me....unless you have lots of time, lots of money and lots of patience, don't even attempt it. Just find a junker 4x4 and swap your body onto it. It would be a lot easier.

Thanks for the answer - that tells me what I need to know (don't do it!).
