Painless wiring help
I just finished installing my 18 circuit universal in my 68 F100. The directions say to use a battery charger with 10amps or less. The closest setting I have is only 2amps. I get power to the fuse block, but nothing out. Well, I did put my test light to the contacts on each fuse and had power. It was only momentary though. The charger has a deep cycle and regular automatic settings. I have had problems deciding the correct connections for the ignition switch. I found a replacement pigtail (new) for a 72 model. I have the correct switch. Problem is, the wires are all black on the pigtail. I had to trace wires on my buddies 72, but am still unsure.
Anyone have any experience with these?
Please help!

Re: Painless wiring help
The '71 and '72 switches are identical, so if you were able to trace down the wires from your friend's harness, you should be OK. However, just to make sure, as I mentioned in the other thread I'll check to see if there were any color changes in the harnesses I have. I believe they're all the same as far as color goes, though.

Re: Painless wiring help
Ok, got a multimeter this week. My neighbor is a civilian contractor for the Army. He works on all kinds of electrical stuff. So I invited him over. He showed me that the 2amp setting was not enough. I went to Sears and bought a charger with a 10amp setting. Now I have power to everything! =D
New question though. I had the headlights, left turn signal and brake lights on. My original ammeter pegged over to the "C" side and began to smoke. 8( Did I have the wires backwards or was it pulling too much juice? It seemed to be fine when I only operated one thing at a time. I think I'll go buy a voltmeter. Everyone I know that works on these vehicles says the voltmeter is better. I just hope I can find one that will fit in the original place.

Re: Painless wiring help
Here's a thought: the factory Ford ammeter is fed through a shunt, so it doesn't measure actual voltage. A shunt is simply a resistor of a very very low resistance, like a big wire. It carries most of the current of the ammeter, and the ammeter measures voltage across the shunt to find current. You replaced your wiring harness and no longer have this shunt, and I'm guessing the harness is set up for a regular voltmeter...thus when you hooked up your factory ammeter to it, you're literally cooking it...too much voltage, since it doesn't have the shunt to tone down the voltage.
Does the documentation that came with the wiring harness support this theory?

Re: Painless wiring help
No, the directions are actually pretty intolerable to me. But, you're right. I remember someone at that other site telling me the same thing. Thanks.
I did go get a voltmeter and mount it in the cluster. It's not a perfect fit, but I can see the gauge just fine. It also works great! I just have a few minor connections to make and some little bugs to work out.
I did get the gas tank kit ordered from Eastwoods today. Hopefully it will be here by next weekend. I still have a lot of little things to do before I can start driving her again! It's fun now that everything is working!

Re: Painless wiring help
Yeah, I'm jealous! It'll be a little while before mine's that far along. Oh well...I'll live vicariously through you. Glad everything's going well for ya. So when are you gonna let us see some progress pics? I know you have a Webshots gallery, but do you have any recent progress pics? I'd love to see what you've done to the interior so far. I went to your Webshots gallery but you don't have the dash assembled yet in those pics.

Re: Painless wiring help
Sounds like "Painless" is really a pain! If you advertise that you are the easiest system around - shouldn't you be! I get sick and tired of advertising claims that just aren't true. My personal opinion is that the more advertising a company does - the less likely the product is going to be as advertised! If something really works - people talk - and talk - and talk! Personally - I think wiring is a pain regardless of how easy it is - I would have chosen a different name for my company if I was them. How about "As Painless as Possible"? I think I will look elsewhere when it's time to rewire my truck!

Oh they are! The fact that they are the only system around helps though!

Re: Painless wiring help
The hardest part was trying to translate the directions. If they would have said to ONLY use a 10amp setting, I wouldn't have had this setback.
I will get some pictures loaded. I'm not doing any cosmetic work yet. But there will be pictures to compare to.
Once I had enough power, I connected the power wire to the ignition switch. Then I put the key in the different positions to identify the correct wires. So that solved that problem. I did find out that my wiper switch is bad. No big deal. I can't wait until this weekend to get some more work done.
