Shunt for the amp gauge

Where can a shunt be purchased,I have a previously 6 volt truck that I converted to 12 volts using the original amp gauge and it does not work correctly. I read somewhere that a shunt had to be installed so a 6 volt amp gauge will work correctly on 12 volts.

Re: Shunt for the amp gauge

According to Classic Truck Shop the amp gauge should work fine. That thought is echoed at the
Novak Conversions page:

"The ammeter is a current measuring device and will work on any direct current voltage. An ammeter that was originally used on 6 volts will work perfectly well on 12 volts. The current rating of the ammeter should be compatible with alternator output. That is, if using a 60 amp alternator, use a 60 amp ammeter. A 30 amp ammeter can be used with the 37 amp Delcotron alternator or a 30 or 40 amp generator."

Re: Shunt for the amp gauge

I am not sure on the 6 volt but the 12 volt Ford amp guages already use a shunt. It requires perfect connections just to work at all and is kind of lame even at it's best. The other tpye is like a Chrysler and they run all the current except the starter, through the amp guage. These are very acurate but they also have faults. For pure function, you can't beat a voltmeter. It will tell you alot more than an amp guage, is easy to wire in and virtually foolproof. Bad thing is matching the original look. All my pickups end up with one hanging under the dash in it's own mount.

Does anyone know what size resistor the original shunt would have been? I've replaced the original idiot light cluster in my '69 F-100 with a full gauge cluster, and need to add a shunt to the ammeter circuit so it works without leaking smoke :)) .
