What the hell is wrong with people? Alternatively, how NOT to wire a radio.
What the hell is wrong with people?
Alternatively, how NOT to wire a radio.
So, the radio in the truck has been a little flakey ever since I got it. Stations come in and out and the thing actually cuts off occasionally. I was in the basement at Dads and found an old Pioneer SuperTuner, so I figured I would stick it in, since I am doing about a 200-mile trip Sunday solo in it.
First of all, I took the old one out and noted what a mess the wiring was. It is a Sears radio. Apparently whoever put it in thought a ground was a ground, because all the speaker wires and the chassis ground were wire nutted together. It is amazing it worked at all.
So I just tore all the old wiring out, figured I would start from Scratch.
In removing the radio and wiring, I discovered that in addition to wiring all the grounds together, the factory speaker was wire into the left positive and the right negative speaker wire. I am really not sure what the goal there was supposed to be?
So, I start putting in the super tuner. HMM, post are too close together, aren’t they supposed to move? Inspect radio; do not see how they move. Pick up quite old instructions, they state the post are supposed to move have a drawing. Inspect supertuner, bears no resemblance to picture. Look at box/instructions, model KP-400. Inspect radio; find tag says KP-8000. Cuss like sailor.
Inspect old radio, perhaps salvageable, it is a temporary solution anyway. Dig through old stereo wire box and locate .50 per foot esoteric audio speaker wire, obviously over kill, but appears to be my only option. Proceed to untangle it when two 12-foot lengths of cheap speaker wire fall from the middle of the mass. Throw tangled esoteric audio wire back in stereo wire box; spiders are displeased with the entire disturbance.
String cheap speaker wire into doors and solder heat shrink to radio harness. Follow wiring schematic attached to top of radio, which I would say a child could follow, but considering the prior job? Anyway, solder/heat shrink power wire and manufacture ground lug. Blow out with compressed air and remove dust from face. Reinstall.
Works like a charm.

Cool! I like a story with a happy ending. So did you just tape the speaker wires to the door hinges? I'm thinking when I get close to putting the doors back onto my project, I'm going to install a couple rubber boots from a late-model car to run the wires through. Looks a lot cleaner that way. But for a driver, what you did will work just fine...and it's probably easier to fix should something go wrong. So where are your speakers located? In the door panel or lower? Are they sealed from the backside to keep moisture off them?

Re: What the hell is wrong with people? Alternatively, how NOT to wire a radio.
The wires were taped with electrical tape to the hinge. This was at least the second install, judging by the amount of tape.
The tape offends my sense of order, so I wire tied them.
The speakers are in the lower rear door panel and aren't sealed. If they were permenant I would have sealed then with XTC baffles.
I'm not going to cut door panels when they are replaced, so will probably end up with "truck boxes" behind the seat. Its far from an ideal solution, but the exhaust is pretty loud anyway.
I want to find a mice working factory radio to put in it, and put a modern head unit in the glove box. I'll lose most of the glove box anyway when I put the A/C in, so..........

My 1972 dealer brochure shows door mounted speakers that were mounted below the door panel in the painted portion of the door. These came with the optional AM/FM stereo radio. There is part numbers for the left and right stereo wiring assy for the speakers with a C8 designation so this option may have been available in 1968. Also intersting to note is a hang on stereo tape cartridge kit and hang on speaker brackets that have the word improvise for a description. Also listed is a part number for a support assy. stereo tape player. hang on stereo .
