Do it myself gas tank cleaning
I wasn't sure if this was the best forum for this, so here goes.
I need to clean and seal the inside of my cab mounted tank. I rescued it from a junk yard in Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico for $30. I have been quoted $55 by a local radiator shop. If I have to pay it I will. Just wondering if any of you know about any kits to do this myself. I don't want to use any crazy chemicals. Some one mentioned pool cleaners. I just don't know how I'd be sure that those chemicals would not end up in my new carb, intake and engine.
Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
I aint sure but if it has rust in it you could put a chain inside of it and get someone to help you shake it alot and the chain get most of the rust out or thats how me and my dad cleaned the tank on his old tyme ford tractor.I have no idea what to use to seal it.

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
I've used the chain method for derusting in the inside of the tank also Suggestion..tie a rope or something to the end of the chain loop and don't let it fall inside the tank..makes getting the chain out easier.
I have used different brands of sealers over the years and they all seem to work.
One word of caution...READ THE LABLE...
some brands are not compatable with methanol based gasoline.

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
There are products on the marjet for cleaning and sealing tanks. You might try Eastwoods. I just bought some stuff off their website catalog yesterday.

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
Tried the chain. It worked pretty well, but I'm kinda picky about that stuff. I'll check out Eastwood.
Thanks!

If you dont feel like standing there and shaking it, put it in the bed of the truck for a week.

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
Por 15 sells a nice kit to do this, but 55.00 is a good price and the kit will cost nearly that much with shipping and such, close enough that it really isn't worth the time..........just let the shp do it.

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
I called that shop back last week. Now the price is $145! I spoke to the same guy that quoted me $55. He swears he never talked to me and never quoted the cheaper fee! I know who won't be getting ANY of my business! Anyway, it looks like the Eastwood kit is going to be my answer. I'll compare the POR 15 kit too.
Thanks,
Bryan

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
A mechanic I know is going to use the Eastwood kit this week on a customers car. He is supposed to call and tell me how he liked it. This guy is more anal about his work than I am, so if he says it's a go, then I'll get it. The Eastwood and POR 15 kits look identical, and they are only $1 different in price. I imagine either will work fine. Now, if I can just work out the electrical gremlins........

Re: Do it myself gas tank cleaning
Keith has previously cleaned and sealed his gas tank with the Por15 product. It's in one of his writeups.
Can't remember price, maybe he will chime in on this thread.
