I will be using the one I got on a 3/4 ton crew cab 390 that will rarely if ever, see the high side of 4500 rpms. I plan to gear it to run about 65-70 in high gear overdrive at 2000 rpm. I do hope to get some good low end grunt out of it though.

I am a little disappointed if it is no beter than a stock iron one for performance. That means I spent $160 just to save 55 pounds.

Lets see, that's about $2.91 per pound. :)

Hey, you got a good price on a Performer, I'd go with it. The throttle response is crisper and it makes more torque, it just runs out of breath early compared to the iron pig but for your purpose who cares. Oh, it makes better mileage too.

Those FE gearheads love to kick around the poor old Performer.

That is good to hear. While I realize that you don't drive a 390 crewcab for fuel economy, anything that helps a little is a bonus. And with gas zooming toward and past 2 bucks a gallon that is a mjor consideration. I am hoping with the overdrive tranny and some tweeking to get 15-16 out on the road. I think with a good clean up on the heads, headers and the right cam it should be do-able. Also if anyone has specs on how much torque a T-85 N tranny will withstand, I would like those figures. It has the R-11 overdrive which I believe is the beefiest one.
