360 Never been rebuilt.
It may seem optomistic at this point, but I would like some pointers in order not to have to rebuild or replace. The original owner told me the engine is original and the way it came from the factory. I have never owned a car older than 1990. I do however remember leaded gas etc...
Do I need to buy lead to protect the engine? The truck only has 23000 miles on it. What makes an engine need lead and does fixing that need of the engine devalue the truck?

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
If you don't want to mess with it, you might consider some kind of lead additive, if there is one around. The problem is the older "lead" engines don't use hardened valve seats. The old engines needed the lead to avoid excess wear, valve seat recession, etc..
The newer "unleaded" engines have hardened valve seats to avoid that problem. You could have a valve job done on it, and add hardened seats. I've seen many differences of opinion on the problem. Some see the wear, some seem not to...I ran my old original engine on unleaded, and never noticed a problem. But others do. My rebuilt engine has hardened seats. MK

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
23,000 miles? Shoot, that truck should be in a museum. :)
If you don't drive it hard with sustained loads at highway speeds I wouldn't worry about it. Don't tear it apart, it's virgin! I used to run additives 'cause the original owner had a big jug of it he gave me when he sold me the truck. That jug lasted about a year and it's been 10 years since, no problems so far.
Make sure the timing and the mixture are set right and the vacuum advance is working.
BTW, you're not gonna put any miles on that are you? :)

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
Now I feel bad. I new it was a nice truck when I bought it. I didnt know there were forums talking about these specific trucks. I had every intention of driving it around town( I live in a very small town). Now your saying not to drive it. I will drive it. Its got the 23k miles but its not a showroom beauty either. It is all original etc. But concours its not. Its sat in a dirty old barn for the last twelve years. I do know I dont plan on hot-rodden it or cut it or any thing like that. I talk to a mustang guy today because I think I want some period wheels that arent hubcabs. I don't know if that gives you an insight into my thought process, but I want to drive it so bad. I have never had a cool ride. Now I do. I don't think I can leave it in my barn.
Thanks

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
I'm just playing with ya, we all wish our trucks had that low a mileage. :)
Drive it, that's what these trucks are for. I can really appreciate your respect for old vintage iron and not wanting to screw it over with a bunch of stupid mods.
Period wheels are cool! You have a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. It may take you a while to find some, I spent over two years finding a nice vintage set of 8-lug slot mags but it was worth it in the cool department.
Enjoy your ride and take care of it. It will in turn take care of you for a long time. Would love to see some pics of it.

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
The day I got it home I parked it in the barn. I left the fully functioning dome light on. Went out a few days later to take a few photos and the battery was dead. I will be on it hard this weekend. New fluids filters everywhere I can think of. Then I will get the good photos. Promise.

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
I definitely agree. These trucks were made to be driven. Even a truck which has been totally rebuilt still deserves to do what it was intended...and that is to be on the road getting dirty and getting looks.
My truck is getting the full nine yards, but believe me, when it's done and on the road, it's going to be driven like any other vehicle...though I'm sure I'll baby it a bit. I won't avoid puddles, but I'll sure wash it off and the end of the day. If it gets scratched up, I'll touch it up, and if a buddy needs help moving, I'll be there.
A happy horse is one who gets ridden hard during the day, but then gets a rubdown and a bucket of oats at the end of the day. (Of course, a pretty filly in the same pasture works wonders too!)
Use it, but don't abuse it. Care for it, but don't baby it. And change your oil regularly, using good quality oil and filter.

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
Barry- I hope it doenst take two years to find a set of wheels. I have been all over the internet-A friend owns a junkyard-I have visited several pawn shops. Two Years??? NO WAY!! I need rubber now. The years it sat up was harder on the tires than on the rest of the truck. They are scarey looking.
Keith- EXACTLY RIGHT THANKS

Re: 360 Never been rebuilt.
My take on the lead. I read once that there is enough residual lead to protect the seats for at least 20,000 miles. It wouldn't hurt to use an addative occasionally but I don't think you need it in every tank. I saw an ad in the back of Hemmings for tetraethyle lead addative. BUT, if you grind the valves and disturb the seats they probably won't last 10,000 miles and the seats will be hammered. That happened to my 72 300-6. Any rebuild should include new hard seats or newer heads with them. It would maybe be cheaper to find the later heads the tget yours done when the time comes. If you go completely through the heads with seats guides springs and valves plus the labor it isn't hard to be halfway to a set of Edelbrocks.
