CHANGING VALVE SPRINGS
Okay sorry if this is a dumb question. Im not a motor head yet. My dad has a 68 F100 with a 390 and has a knock in the motor. ( I have a 1972) A couple of people have told him today that it sounds like a broken valve spring. (I know it is easy to check he just found out today). How hard is it to change the valve springs and what tools will we need. You guys always come through with my questions, please dont fell me now! LOL. This board is very helpful Thanks in advance.

Re: CHANGING VALVE SPRINGS
get a "valve spring tool" from k-d tools. Get a long, 6-8 ft piece of rope that will fit in the spark plug hole. Remove plugs, and spin motor over (by hand) until the offneding cylinder is at BDC. Tie a knot in one end of the rope & start the other end down the plug hole, until full. rotate the motor (slowly) until the cylinder in question has come most of the way up in the bore, compressing the rope against the face of the valve in the process Use the spring tool to compress the spring(you may have to persuade it with a few blows from a small hammer & some penetrating oil)The retainer should drop, exposing the keepers.Remove the keepers,& the retainer. Change spring & reverse the process to reassemble. Pay close attention to the keepers upon installation & make SURE they stay in position.
the end.
Country boy method, but it works

Re: CHANGING VALVE SPRINGS
Cool idea with using the rope. I have always done it with compressed air, but that is cool for folks that don't have air.
