posticon 'Lo ya' ll ! A North Carolina newbie

Glad to find a message board where the
censorship is based on character rather than
the chant for "Mo money",(reffering to FTE's
forums).
Now, with the intro aside, I'll tell ya why
I chose this ford forum (beyond the aforementioned statement).
Years ago, as a teenager, 13 or 14, my best friend had a longing for a neighbor's '53 ford p/u. It was shiney-black with a gold pin stripping border and cool tires and wheels. The motor was only stock, but that
never mattered. Jimmy's mouth watered all the same. Now Jimmy was about three years older than I, so he was in the correct era for pleading with his daddy to buy the truck
from the owner. It took Jimmy close to 1 1/2
years of bugging his daddy and on his 17th
birthday, Jimmy's dad handed him a well worn
key (just one!) and told him he better go get it before he changed his mind. He bought it for only 800.00 bucks!
There's more...
Somewhere between Jimmy's kindled interest for the '53 Anniversary Edition pick-up and 18 months later, Jimmy managed a deal with a
very old man who had a '55 or '56 chevy truck
that he was willing to let go for $200 cash.
The old man's brief history of the chevy was sketchy at best, but he did say that his son
had put another engine in the truck. He said
he couldn't see too well to drive for some time and did not have the inclination to drive anyhow. He thanked Jimmy for the cash
and headed for the corner store where the local folks gathered to 'talk about the
best-of-times'.
Before I go any further with this, I gotta
tell ya'll just a little more about my first
impression of the pick-up; It was the ugliest damn site I ever saw! None of the
tires matched, I don't remember any rusted-
through body panels, but I do recollect the
"make-me-puke" paint job it sported! It
seemed that in times past, to combat the effects of possible rust, someone had used
a 4 inch paint brush to touch it up and always used a different color, ie; orange, red, brown, blue, etc. The interior was a
little ratted-out, but under the hood came a
huge surprise. Not savvy at all about building engines; our thing was hunting, trapping and girls that made out (got the
drift?) we found that this ugly, worn-out
excuse for mobility could definately burn
rubber! I don't mean a short black mark. I'm talking the whole tread. Seriously! We raided every road-side dump to replace the
tires we went thru! With a 3-on-the-tree and never using the brake, the speedo would get to @ 55 mph before any forward movement. One of us would get behind the wheel while the other would stand aside and just listen to the roar of the engine. What a blast!!
Jimmy finally got rid of the truck for one reason or another. That's when he found out that the motor had been pulled from a chevelle. Seems that the old man's son had almost suceeded in out-running the highway patrol when he rolled it.
Unfortunately, I don't have anything as nostalgic to drive these days, but I do have my '72 Sport Custom. I paid $600 for it. Had to eventually pull the 360 out and replaced it with a 400 cleveland that I got from a
salvage yard. I rebuilt it myself under a shelter. It is a strong motor with loads of
low-end torque and just loves the frequent visits to the gas pump! Even though I'm the
third owner, I still have the original sales contract between the original buyer and the dealer.
A lot of the folks scoff at the idea of driving something 'out of date'. I don't see it that way at all! My '72 has character! What more is there to say?!

Welcome, cantool! Glad to have you aboard! I think we all have a story or two like that, and I always enjoy hearing them. And I totally agree, these old trucks definitely have character....the good kind.

Hey Russell!
Just outside a small town (speed trap actually) called Angier. 'Bout 25 minutes
south of Raleigh.
Born and raised in Greenville, NC though,
which is close to where the events of that
story took place.
Glad to have met ya, Russell. Are you
stationed with the CG there?
