Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
I read a while back at that other place that I could swap a newer (up to 77?) rear housing assy into my 72 and correct the track diffrence that causes the rear wheels to look sunken.
I want a 9" with 31 spline axels that is a bolt in. (ie the spring perches and bolt pattern are the same)
What do I need to be looking for?
IIRC the 4x4 frame remained the same until 77.5 but the 2wd is wider starting in 73?

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
You can do it on the 4x4's up to 77 1/2 but not the 4x2's.
In '73 the 4x2 frame got 3" wider behind the cab. The 9" axle got wider by 4" and the spring perches stick out about 2" farther on each side. You would need to move the perches in to match the springs on the '72.
Sorry about that.
How about some wider wheels and tires for the rear, that's what I did and now they stick out a little more than the front do. With the stock narrow axle there's more room for bigger meat.
Interesting, the typical wandering disappeared after doing that.

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
Relocating the spring perches is not that big of a job. You can reuse the old ones if you are real good with a torch but new perches are available and cheap. Just go to any place that sells traier supplys and they have them for a few bucks each. Just make sure you measure the pinion angle and get the new ones welded on in the right place. Also I think the above stated information was a bit inaccurate. The F-250s stayed narrow until mid 77. But I think the 1/2 tons all changed in 73. I am not 100% sure on that but maybe 95%.

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
So just so I'm clear, (I'm a little slow sometimes) is there any reason that I can't put a rear from a later 4x4 into a 2x4?

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
Willowbilly3, I’m 95% sure all ‘73+ F100/F250 4x2 frames got wider. I remember this when trying to do some bumper swapping.
Robert, I’m not that up on the 4x4’s and that’s a good question. You’re talking about using a 9” rear out of a pre ’77 ½ 4x4 which still used the narrower frame. Seems like it would bolt in but two questions I have is the pinion angle different and how much wider did those particular rearends get? Maybe willowbilly3 can get some measurements on the 9” 4x4 rear (and also the 4x2 F100/F250 frame widths).

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
My question was if the 1/2 tons 4x4s kept the narrow frame past 72. I don't think they did. We put a 72 body on a 76 F-150 frame once and that 76 was wider. The F-250 didn't get wider until mid 77 with the introduction of the married transfer case and high pinion gront diff.
There should be no reason that I know of to keep you from interchanging 2wd and 4x4 differentials. The only thing is the 4x4 did not come with the lighter GVW ratings and you may find your 2wd had smaller brakes or other weight capacity related items.

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
Willowbilly3 you're absolutely correct! The '73+ F100 and F150 4x4's frames did get wider past the cab just like the 4x2's. The rearends are the same width as the ones in the '73+ 4x2 but the 4x4 pinion angle is different plus the axles are 31 spline. Spring perches are wider apart to accomodate the wider frames on both. Got this info from the good guys in the '73-'79 forum. Sorry for the misleading info Robert, I'm out of my realm here (like I have a realm). :)

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
O.K., so it sounds like I'm sol on that swap.
On to the next question.
Where to start looking for 31 spline axels for my existing rear (If I want a True Trac, I need 31 splines)

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
OK...I'm a little slow sometimes too, and I was having a hard time following that from each reply. So let me see if I can condense it to a couple lines, for the sake of clarity...
'67-'72 all ---> narrow frame (actually, this goes back a few years prior to '67, doesn't it?)
'67-'77-1/2 4WDs ---> wide front frame, narrow rear frame
'67-'77-1/2 2WDs ---> full wide frame
Do I have this right? Frame width didn't differ between the half and three-quarter tons?

Re: Rear Axel (complete assy) swap from newer truck
Close, here's how it is:
'67-'72 2WD/4WD all narrow (don't know how far back that goes, 34" wide was an SAE standard for all trucks back then)
'73-'79 all 2WD narrow front, wide rear
'73-'79 F100 4WD narrow front, wide rear
'73-'77.5 F250 4WD all narrow
'77.5-'79 F250 4WD narrow front, wide rear
