Slipping Column Shifter (Auto)!
My 3 speed auto column shifter is slipping - I can't change gears (PRND21) without opening the hood and moving the linkage by hand (good thing my e-brake works well, but not the safest thing to do, I know).
I thought I'd post here to see if anyone had run into the same problem before, and to see if there are any 'gotcha's' to avoid. I have the full shop manual set, so I should be able to figure it out eventually...

Re: Slipping Column Shifter (Auto)!
I had this same Problem about 5 months ago and come to find out that the Steering Collar had broke on the inside.
You can buy a New one from just about all Parts Stores for about $15.00 bucks..or if you have another parts Truck take it off there and use it...But I say go Buy a New One...this happend alot with these Truck and if you use an Old one you may be looking at it happenning agian down the road...
If I get a chance I'll go get the old one and send a Pic of what broke if you need it.

A photo would be great if it's not a bother. At least I know what to look for now.
Thanks!

Re: Slipping Column Shifter (Auto)!
I have also seen the indexing lug break off the shift tube.
If you have the books it shouldn't be tough but there are a couple bolts in there that are tricky. You don't want to take the nuts all the way off or the bolts go down the inside of the column. The head of the bolts go into slots at the top of the column tube if I remember right. Also be careful not to bust off the little thing that hits the nuetral safety/reverse light switch. Been there-done that, not fun.

Re: Slipping Column Shifter (Auto)!
Thanks for the info and link. I pulled everything apart yesterday, and determined that the cast shift collar had split apart, as predicted...
It looks like the automatic collar is a different part number from the manual collar (linked on eBay), but at least I know what to look for now.
Thanks again for the tips!

Re: Slipping Column Shifter (Auto)!
Yes they are two different ones for Auto and Man. but O'Reilly Auto Parts Store here in Town has them and AutoZone does also and I think they both Sale them for around $19.00 for what you need..
This would be a Good Time to have a Good Reason to switch over to a Tilt Column..
Also while your in there you may want to look at the Turn Signal Switch to make sure it's good even if it looks good "you may want to go ahead and change it out" if it is the Stock one that came with it from the Factory.
(You can also get these from your Local Parts Store for about $10.00)
Sorry I didn't get those Pic's to you but I went to BestBuy to try to get another Charger for my Camera and they didn't have one in stock so they had to ordered me one..

Re: Slipping Column Shifter (Auto)!
Cool - I'll check 'em out. The prices on eBay would be about as high once you factor in shipping...
I'm going to replace the turn signal switch while I'm in it - the plastic parts are cracked and would probably completely fail soon anyway.
I also need to replace the metal clip on the slip tube that actuates the park/neutral lockout switch - any ideas on where to get one of these (my LMC truck catalog doesn't list them, but I suppose I could pull one from a junk truck). My parts truck is a manual, so it doesn't have the same setup.
Thanks again!
