gear/speed problems
I was driving my truck yesterday and all of a sudden the speed dropped off and leveled out at 20 mph. I was able to drive it (going 20 in a 65) to a shop where they said the some sort of hose or linkage to the transmission was broken and would not switch gears. I have a c-6 and I think I may have been taxing it too much. I was leaving a highway that was a 70 and that gets into the red zone on my truck. If all goes well i will be doing this daily. is there anything I should do to help with this?

Re: gear/speed problems
Hmmmm...well, if the small hose going to the C-6's vacuum modulator came disconnected or damaged so that the modulator wasn't getting a full vacuum signal, it would affect shifting. Normally that would mean it would shift much later. So your truck wasn't able to shift into a higher gear? You say you couldn't go over 20...so you're saying you think it was stuck in 1st gear?
Then again, a vacuum line becoming disconnected at speed wouldn't have downshifted for you. It would just have made it difficult to upshift automatically, until engine RPMs were fairly high.
What ratio is your rearend gears? These trucks usually have very low (high numeric) ratios, since they were never really designed for interstate commuting, but instead were designed to be workhorses. Swapping in a higher ratio would definitely raise your top end speed and drop the engines RPMs at higher speeds, with a slight loss of low-end takeoff. You might be able to make a slight difference by using taller rear tires too.
FWIW, the C-6 is an extremely strong transmission...one of the best you can get. I really doubt you were 'taxing' it just by normal driving.

Re: gear/speed problems
I guess where i'm getting that is that there seems to be a whole lot more resistance from the pedal when increasing speed than on other cars. is this normal?

Re: gear/speed problems
Hmmm...by "resistance from the pedal" do you mean you have to press harder on the gas pedal compared to other cars? That would simply be the return spring on the carburetor linkage. I'd guess that someone has installed a heavier return spring at some point. You can definitely replace that with a lighter spring to ease foot fatigue on longer drives. A lot of cars/trucks actually use two light springs, one inside the other. That way if one lets go, you still have SOMETHING as a backup, rather than having a runaway engine.
You might also want to check your carburetor linkage. If it's the stock rod-type linkage contraption, it's very possible it's worn and binding. It should be very obvious when manually wiggling it from under the hood.
