posticon engine trouble or gear trouble?

I went to eat around and when I went to start home I turned the key and nothing happened...nothing. I had battery power because I had lights. I spent half a hour messing with the battery cables(new ones) and terminals. nothing worked. then I shifted from park to neutral then to park again and it started up. so....what does this sound like to you guys?
oops. saw the right area...clicked the wrong one. can post be moved?

Sounds like the neutral safety switch is flaky or needs adjusting. It's on top of the steering column down by the pedals.
