Borg Warner T-18 question
Got a question about t-18's. I noticed my real seal on my tailhousing has started to leak. "Next to the U-joint". I think half the problem that caused this was a flaky U-joint, which I replaced today. I noticed whoever installed the last one, didn't center it very well. One cup was nearly flush with the yoke end, while the other was recessed past the clip groove. Anyway, thats fixed, but I gotta deal with the leak. Can you just take off the tailhousing, and replace the seal? or does the whole thing have to be taken apart? It probably could use a rebuild , but in real life, it's still probably got 100k still left on it, knowing how stout they are...Is there a easy way to change that seal? Obviously, it can't be taken out from the back unless the yoke, etc is gone...It's wider than the seal...MK

Re: Borg Warner T-18 question
Slip yoke or bolt-on yoke the rear seal comes out the rear, slip out the slip yoke or unbolt the bolt-on yoke.

Re: Borg Warner T-18 question
How do you unbolt the bolt on yoke? Do you have to unbolt the tailhousing, or will it just slip out using a spline joint from within the tailhousing, and just pull out?

Re: Borg Warner T-18 question
I did find some pix of the T-18. Also a full diagram, but no extension is on it.. It does have a straight spline on the output shaft. So I assume I can just pull the yoke piece out of the tailshaft, and slide it back in after I replace the seal? I didn't think to pull on it when I had the u-joints off of it yesterday. I assumed it was locked in...So it, "the bolt on yoke piece" will slide out much the same as a slip yoke? Obviously, I haven't messed with those trannies too much...:/ MK

Re: Borg Warner T-18 question
Yes, the fixed yoke is splined onto the output shaft just like a slip yoke except it's locked on with a big retaining nut just like a pinion yoke on a rearend. Remove the u-joint and you'll see it, I forget what size the nut is, 1 1/8", 1 5/8"? It takes a thinwall socket to fit in there. Forgot the torque spec. but it's over 100 ft.lbs. so put the tranny in 1st or you might have to lock the tranny in two gears.

Re: Borg Warner T-18 question
Ok, I got you now. At least I can change the seal without too much trouble...This is something I want to fix before too long. That truck has been totally leak free since I put the rebuilt engine in it. Has kind of spoiled me...Now it's spitting gear oil, and it really bugs me, even though when I checked the level, it wasn't that low. I hate leaving puddles of oil in peoples driveways..:/ It's also making a greasy mess, the way the yoke slings the oil all over. MK

Just think of it as proactive rust prevention.

Re: Borg Warner T-18 question
If you had a u-joint off center the vibration may have loosened something up a little. I would plan on putting a speedi-sleeve on the yoke as it will no doublt have a groove run in iy where the seal rides. Also if the nut gets a little loose they will leak out around the splines and may not be leaking past the seal. I always clean it all up real good and put silicon under the washer before I re install the retaing nut to make sure it can't leak past the splines and nut.
