Adjusting Shift Points - 70's C6
Howdy,
I've got a 67 F100 with a rebuilt 1970-ish C6.
It shifted fine, but really soft, so I had a TCI valve body put in.
The shifting is much crisper now, but I'm getting stacked shifts. I'd like to be able to wind it up much more in between shifts. I've been told that the easiest way to do that is to adjust the screw in my modulator.
The question: In or out?
Also, I have a black stripe modulator in it now that I've heard are mostly used for diesels. Didn't know that - always worked fine.
I'm looking for firm drawn-out shift points without taking it to a tranny shop.
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Adjusting Shift Points - 70's C6
I don't have my C-6 book with me but mine has a white stripe.
You won't get more than a few hundred RPM from the modulator and it will impact part throttle shifts as well. If you need say 1500 more RPM like me, that is not going to cut it.
I've been told that the governor is the culprit and that it can be drilled to fix it. Problem is that’s about all the info I can get. Also the governor assembly from a Cobra Jet or Cleveland car is said to work well. The truck ones are bad.
You can try asking at:

But I apparently have a personality conflict with them, since I can't seem to get a straight answer.
If you figure it out, let me know.

Nice link, DuckRyder - I can see why you quit checking back.
I'm going to give that a shot and let you know how it went.
I hope you're happy with your TCI setup. Its almost identical to mine (Sat Nite Special Torque Converter and valve body). It really brings the life out of that C6.
Have you heard of anyone running TCI's Sat Nite Special C6? For 750 bucks it might be my replacement tranny if this one gives out.

Re: Adjusting Shift Points - 70's C6
I've been pretty happy with the TCI stuff.
The deep pan doesn't fit the truck cross member very well, but other than that and the WOT shift point I can't fault it.
I havent been to worried about it since the motor is in the middle of a bouild and I'm actually going to be replacing the 2000 stall converter with a TCI 2600 stall (Breakaway) due to the new Lunati solid cam.
Figured one I got the engine running right and the gears changed I'd revisit the shift point issue.

Re: Adjusting Shift Points - 70's C6
Well I adjusted my modulator screw in about 2 full turns and drove it all day today.
I noticed much firmer shifts and a real sweet wind up from 1st to second, but 2nd to 3rd is still a little close for me. It might just be that I'm so used to driving a stick and really holding on before I shift up.
Any way you look at it, though, it feels much better.

Put a "trans-go" kit in it. You will
throw rocks at that other place.
