Steering Wheel
I just started to rebuild a 69 f100. I'm new to the hobby and to Ford and have noticed that the steering columns all sit slightly offcenter towards the left. Can someone please educate me on why this is and if there is something that can be done to center it. Its driving me nuts!

Re: Steering Wheel
I was hoping somebody else who understood what you were asking would jump in, but since nobody has so far, I'll bite...
When you say "off-center", what is your reference point? (Off-center from what?) I can't say as I've noticed this on any of my trucks...but then again, I'm not always the most observant person when it comes to some details. Do you mean you don't think it's centered in the 'driver's ****pit' area, between the tranny hump and the door?

Re: Steering Wheel
Keith,
I meant in the ****pit area. When you look down at the steering column, were it bolts into the bottom of the dash it looks a little off to the left.

Re: Steering Wheel
Alan: So it looks like the top of the column is farther toward the driver's side than the bottom of the column? Hmmm...don't think I ever noticed that on my trucks. The dashboard attachment point is fixed, so there's no way of moving that around. The bottom of the column is in line with the steering box and attached there, so there's really no way of tweaking that, aside from removing the steering box and milling some of the flat surface of where it contacts the frame. By moving the steering box closer to the frame, the steering wheel end would swing out towards the driver's side a bit. But I don't think you'll be able to remove enough material from the steering box mounting surface to make much of a difference at the wheel.
Another thought...if the left frame rail has been tweaked a bit due to an accident (that is, pushed in towards the passenger side), it would in turn push the top of the steering column towards the driver's side...but I kinda doubt that's the problem, as you'd have noticed that, I'm sure.

Re: Steering Wheel
Your steering column is exactly like it should be. Well at least exactly like Ford designed it. They did it to put the driver closer to the door to allow for "more interior room for passengers". This came up on the dark side and Barry should be able to back me up on it.

Re: Steering Wheel
There was an article in classic truck last year or the year before. They were doing a ifs front susp. on a mid sixties f100. They went to alot of trouble to center the steering column. I never noticed that they were off center until I read the article. Ron

Re: Steering Wheel
I think the steering wheels are supposed to be like that, because most of us are a little off-center also. :))

Re: Steering Wheel
Gentleman,
Thank you for your help, I guess i'll try to get pass this and move on to the next problem. I'm in the process of replacing the steering box, & steering column. I just picked them up from a used 73 f100. I also took from the truck a set of used flowmaster mufflers with side exits, and a bench seat. I am also currently looking for a used power booster to add it to my truck.
I'm sure i'll be in touch with you all again.
Thanks, Alan

Re: Steering Wheel
I have noticed this before but it never really bothered me. I would think if you mounted the column and marked where the under dash bolts were, then removed the column again and took a die grinder and slotted the two mounting bolt slots to the side you could come up with some adjustment. I think the holes in the firewall bracket are big enough to allow for some lateral movement.
Also this misalignment isn't as noticable on manual steerig I don't think.
