Removing rear spring bushings

Well, I got off work a little early today, and since it was such a nice day and I was in a good mood, I decided to head to the shop for a few hours. I'm planning on taking a vacation day on Friday, so I'll have a 3-day weekend, and I hope to have the rearend and springs completely sandblasted, re-assembled with the new polygraphite bushings and installed back on the frame by Sunday night. I decided to spend this evening getting things ready, mainly by getting the spring packs disassembled and the rubber bushings removed.

I know the general concensus is to burn them out, but I didn't have a torch. I tried using a propane torch :)) but obviously that didn't have enough heat. I was about to just drop them off to the machine shop and get them pressed out when I came up with a brilliant plan: Using my electric drill, I just drilled as many holes through the rubber portion as I could, and lo and behold, they popped right out! Cool....I'll definitely have to remember that one. Anyway, got all the springs packs tore down and all the bushings removed, so I'm ready to fire up the sandblaster first thing Friday morning.

I WAS planning on just using the rattlecan paint on the springs, but after giving it some thought, I believe I'm going to finally break out the POR-15 and use that instead. I believe it'll provide a much tougher finish and last longer. Now THIS should be interesting! I'll definitely have the camera with me, so I'll get some pics posted sometime over the weekend.

Another method that works well for rubber bushings. Slip a hacksaw blade through the hole, then reatach the hanle and saw away. :pp

Hmmmm....well, that would work well for bushings without a metal tube insert through it, but the Ford springs have the insert. To make matters worse, the inside diameter is smaller than the average hacksaw blade height, I believe.
